Dustin Poirier: Eddie Alvarez knows "the truth" about UFC 211 no contest
Tom Taylor - August 8, 2017
Back in May, UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier very nearly picked up the biggest win of his career, as he had former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez on spaghetti legs during their UFC 211 undercard scrap. Regrettably, Poirier was then cracked with a salvo of illegal knees. When he was unable to continue, the bout was ruled a no contest. Unsurprisingly, Poirier then set his sights on a rematch with Alvarez, and for a time, it looked like he’d get one. Ultimately, however, the UFC opted to pit Alvarez against breakthrough star Justin Gaethje, leaving Poirier without a dance partner

Now, he’s keen to step back into the cage and take another step in the direction of the title. During the broadcast of last night’s UFC Fight Night 114, Pettis revealed that he has an opponent in mind for his second fight back in the lightweight division. With his desired Ferguson fight apparently off the table, Gaethje then suggested he’d like a fight with Eddie Alvarez as a backup plan. He made his call for a fight with Alvarez on The MMA Hour.

After being tagged and rocked by a big punch from Poirier, Alvarez came alive and not only survived the onslaught, but went as far as to rock Poirier in the second round. Unfortunately, three illegal knees from the former champ dropped Poirier, and resulted in referee Herb Dean calling the fight a no contest.

UFC veteran Dustin Poirier made his return to lightweight last year at ‘UFC FN: Mendes vs. Lamas’ in April as he knocked out Carlos Diego Ferreira in the 1st round. Following that fight, Poirier went on to defeat Yancy Medeiros via TKO, and Joseph Duffy via decision. The return to lightweight has been viewed as a bit of a career resurgence for Poirier, who put together an impressive run at featherweight for several years, but fell short of becoming a #1 contender.
