With win over Eddie Alvarez, Dustin Poirier expects to be "one win away" from title shot
Tom Taylor - March 26, 2017
Barring a blitzkrieg, knockout loss to the ever-dangerous Michael Johnson, Louisiana’s Dustin Poirier has looked absolutely fantastic since returning to the lightweight division. Since he made this return, he has picked up emphatic defeats over Carlos Diego Ferreira, Yancy Medeiros, Joseph Duffy, Bobby Green and Jim Miller. These big wins have earned him a fight with former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. The two talents will collide on the main card of UFC 211 this May. If Poirier passes this upcoming test, he expects to be just one win away from a UFC lightweight title shot. He explained this feeling in a recent interview with MMAJunkie Radio.

On the other hand, Eddie Alvarez will be looking to bounce back from his recent UFC 205 loss to Conor McGregor, where he was TKOd in the 2nd round to lose his lightweight title.

Despite sustaining a leg injury in the third round, Poirier ultimately won this action-packed fight by majority decision. With this win, the Louisiana native rebounded from a tough, knockout loss to lightweight contender Michael Johnson, and reaffirmed himself as one of the division’s gamest competitors.

UFC veteran Dustin Poirier made his return to lightweight last year at ‘UFC FN: Mendes vs. Lamas’ in April as he knocked out Carlos Diego Ferreira in the 1st round. Following that fight, Poirier went on to defeat Yancy Medeiros via TKO, and Joseph Duffy via decision. The return to lightweight has been viewed as a bit of a career resurgence for Poirier, who put together an impressive run at featherweight for several years, but fell short of becoming a #1 contender.
