Report: Eddie Alvarez misses out on ‘red panty night’ after demanding too much

UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has missed out on a ‘red panty night’ after asking for more money to fight Conor McGregor. Brendan Schaub revealed on the Fighter and the Kid podcast that Alvarez apparently complained to the executives at the UFC and was met with an indignant Joe Silva before the match-maker parted ways with the promotion:

“So from what I hear, Eddie Alvarez was complaining to the UFC brass that he wanted more money to fight Conor McGregor. He wanted pay-per-view points, he wanted a certain amount of money. And the UFC, you know Joe Silva’s going out, he goes, ‘You wanna do what? Oh one of the biggest fight card of all time at Madison Square Garden. First time the UFC’s ever been to New York and we’re allowing you to fight Conor McGregor as the main event but you want more money? Nah, I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do. We’re going to pull Conor off, give him a bigger fight. Then, here’s Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Alvarez, even with belt in hand, appears to not have much more clout than Al Iaquinta, who’s current contract dispute with the UFC currently has him on the outs at the moment. In Alvarez’s case, the UFC replaced a massive payday fight with Conor McGregor to that of a comparatively unknown Khabib Nurmagodemov.

Nate Diaz scored two ‘red panty night’s’ as the Irishman eloquently put it, banking big time both times. Diaz earned $2 million in the second fight, alone.

So it seems as if Alvarez may have inadvertently talked his way out of the much-talked about fight with Conor McGregor at the historic fight event in New York at one of the mecca’s of combat sports in Madison Square Garden.

Not to say that Khabib isn’t as tough if not tougher than Conor, especially in terms of wrestling. The Dagestani fighter is a perfect 23-0, with seven of those wins occurring in the UFC. Although injuries have plagued his career, the 28-year-old has been poised for a shot a lightweight gold for a while now, with a definitive decision victory over former champ Rafael dos Anjos,

While Khabib was tending to injuries, Alvarez became the man who did the unthinkable and finished RDA and took his belt. Alvarez (28-4) of course has not yet defended the belt, so commanding pay-per view points and a huge chunk of money from the UFC on his first go-around appears to have been presumptuous based off of Joe Silva’s response.

So instead of a massive, historic fight with Conor McGregor at Madison Square Garden, Alvarez will take on Nurmagomedov in Toronto instead.
