Eddie Alvarez questions why his UFC 205 contract pay got Conor McGregor so emotional

By Russell Ess - October 4, 2016

Eddie Alvarez says that he will be making “millions” for his UFC lightweight title fight against UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor at UFC 205. The historic card will feature the two UFC champions in McGregor’s attempt to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two different UFC weight class titles at the same time while Alvarez will look to take down one of the biggest names in the sport.

Leading up to the announcement of the fight, there were rumors going around that there was trouble putting the fight together due to pay issues on Alvarez’s end. The UFC lightweight champion even responded directly to BJPenn.com via twitter regarding the report and stated the story of him trying to negotiate for too much money was a lie.

During the UFC 205 press conference at Madison Square Garden, “The Notorious” told the media that Alvarez’s contract to fight their prized bout was the same one he had and didn’t negotiate new terms for the fight with the notorious record-breaking McGregor.

“I don’t think he should have stuff like that or should know things about how much money I am making and things of that sort,” Alvarez said to Ariel Helwani on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour (transcribed by Bloody Elbow). “I don’t know who told him or what was what. I know management teams talk in order to get deals done. So maybe it was the management teams talking, letting them know what each other got done what they have to do to get the fight done itself.”

“But why does he give a sh-t? He seemed angry about it, right? I don’t know why he was so angry about it. He seemed upset that I took the deal. It was a little weird to me. I don’t know if there was a stipulation, like if I asked for more money and the fight was off. Maybe he wanted the fight to be off. I’m not sure, he just seemed a little bit angry about it.”
