Dustin Poirier responds to reports of Eddie Alvarez rematch: I want that title shot
Tom Taylor - May 2, 2018
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the UFC’s July 28 return to Calgary, Alberta, Canada could be topped by a rematch between surging lightweight contender Dustin Poirier and former champion Eddie Alvarez. Shortly after the reports of this rematch surfaced, Eddie Alvarez assured Ariel Helwani that the fight is “not fucking happening” and that he won’t be fighting until the UFC offers him a new contract first.
Eddie Alvarez shuts down talk of Poirier and Diaz fights, demands new UFC contract
Tom Taylor - May 2, 2018
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the UFC’s July 28 return to Calgary, Alberta, Canada could be topped by a rematch between surging lightweight contender Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez. These reports were particularly timely given the trouble the UFC seems to be having ironing out the details of the women’s flyweight title fight between Nicco Montano and Valentina Shevchenko that was originally expected headline the card. Apparently, however, reports of the UFC’s plan for a Calgary rematch between Alvarez and Poirier were a little premature. Alvarez, as it turns out, is not interested in this bout unless the UFC offers him a new and improved contract first, as he only has one obligation left on his current contract. This, per Ariel Helwani.
Report | UFC eyeing Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier rematch for return to Calgary
Tom Taylor - May 1, 2018
When Dustin Poirier knocked out Justin Gaethje in the thrilling main event of the UFC’s recent stop in Glendale, AZ, it seemed like he’d all but locked up a bout with new UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier even claimed that he’d been contacted by Nurmagomedov’s team about a potential fight. “Khabib’s manager reached out to me and told me I’m the next guy in line and they want to fight me,” Poirier said on a recent episode of The MMA Hour.

Eddie Alvarez sends message of "absolute respect" to kindred spirit Carlos Condit
Tom Taylor - April 17, 2018
There are a few special fighters who will go down in MMA history based on their propensity for extreme violence in the cage. Former UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler is one. Former World Series of Fight lightweight champ Justin Gaethje is another. Then there’s the so-called “most violent man in MMA” Eddie Alvarez. And of course, there’s former interim welterweight champ Carlos Condit, who came up short against Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira in the co-main event of the UFC’s Saturday night stop in Glendale, Arizona…. Shortly after his loss to Cowboy, which came by way of second-round submission, the ever-violent Condit issued a weighty post-fight statement on Instagram, meditating on the defeat itself, and on his future in the sport.
Eddie Alvarez makes prediction for possible Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight
Tom Taylor - April 16, 2018
One of the biggest fights that could possibly be made in MMA today is a showdown between undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, and former champion Conor McGregor. This potential matchup has fans divided right down the middle, as some firmly believe that Nurmagomedov would pound McGregor into applesauce on the mat, while others feel McGregor’s crackling firepower would be more than enough to put Nurmagomedov down.
Eddie Alvarez argues he is Khabib Nurmagomedov's kryptonite: "Everyone knows it"
Tom Taylor - April 10, 2018
Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 223, Khabib Nurmagomedov captured the UFC lightweight title with a decision win over last-minute replacement opponent Al Iaquinta. While Nurmagomedov’s title win, which moved him to an insane 26-0 overall, wasn’t entirely flawless, it did strengthen his reputation as a seemingly unbeatable fighter. While many fight fans are becoming increasingly doubtful that Nurmagomedov can be stopped, former UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez isn’t buying it. In fact, he believes he’s the man to beat Khabib—and he thinks we all know it too.
Eddie Alvarez explains why he couldn't accept short-notice fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov
Tom Taylor - April 3, 2018
When Tony Ferguson was forced out the UFC 223 main event with a freak injury, the UFC began a desperate search for a replacement opponent for Khabib Nurmagomedov. While they ultimately landed on UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, there were a few other options on the table, including Brian Ortega and Eddie Alvarez. Speaking during an Instagram Live video session on Monday night, Alvarez explained why he wasn’t able to accept a short-notice fight with Nurmagomedov.
VIDEO | Eddie Alvarez Takes a Crack at Why Conor McGregor Hasn't Been Stripped
Justin Golightly - January 30, 2018
If you’re still confused about the UFC’s lightweight title situation, you’re not the only one. Even Tony Ferguson is frustrated. Dana White was criticized for not being clear when he announced that Ferguson’s bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 would be for a title, but didn’t clarify which title would be on the line. What makes it more mysterious, is that Conor McGregor has yet to be stripped of his title. A lot of people had their own theories as to what is going on, but Eddie Alvarez recently tried his hand at it. “I saw another theory online and I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s exactly what it is.’ What’s going on is, this fight [between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson] is 0 for 3. They’re not going to strip Conor [McGregor] of a belt and then have a vacant title for a fight that’s 0 for 3. They have not been able to make this fight. Every time they book it, they’re not able to make the fight – either Khabib gets hurt or Tony gets hurt or someone gets hurt.”
BREAKING | Eddie Alvarez Goes Off on 'Phony' Nate Diaz for Turning Down Their Fight
Justin Golightly - January 26, 2018
As soon as Nate Diaz announced that he’s tired of waiting on the sidelines and ready to come back to bring excitement to the UFC again, a lot of fighters wanted to get on that action. Dana White said he was going to offer him a fight, but that it wasn’t going to be Tyron Woodley or Conor McGregor. While there were some talk going around about unofficial UFC ‘Most Violent’ champion Eddie Alvarez, it looks like this latest public service announcement confirms he may have been one of the fights offered to the Diaz brother. Alvarez just blasted Nate Diaz for supposedly not practicing what he preaches. “If you only want Conor [McGregor] there’s nothing wrong with that, but keep it 100 with everyone, Nate Diaz. Don’t call out the entire [lightweight] division when you don’t want no work from anyone of us It’s as phony as your whole character, you f-cking dork . You changed, man. Fake news. For your information, Nate Diaz had a common friend text me a message he sent saying he ain’t trying to fight me because I lost to Conor and he beat Conor on some MMA math sh-t . I was as shocked as you are right now. You forget [Rafael dos Anjos] ragdolled you? Nate’s fake news.” — Eddie Alvarez on Twitter.

Dustin Poirier Calls the 'King of Violence' Eddie Alvarez a Track Team Captain
Justin Golightly - January 5, 2018
Dana White just said yesterday that Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson would be the next fight they make. Whether or not it will be for the interim lightweight title or the undisputed lightweight title, will depend solely on if and when Conor McGregor decides he is coming back. This leaves Dustin Poirier wondering just who Eddie Alvarez is going to wait and fight. This is the reason why he believes he finally has Alvarez in match-making checkmate. “It’s the only fight that makes sense right now. There are two guys ranked above me right now, but both of them are coming off losses in their most recent fights. I feel like I’m close to the top, but there is a lot going on right now in my division. If they strip Conor [McGregor] of the title and Tony [Ferguson] and Khabib [Nurmagomedov] fight for the actual title, there is no one else for me to fight but Eddie Alvarez. All roads lead back to that fight. I knew it was going to happen like this, and I think Eddie and I should fight to see who gets the next shot at the title.”
Tony Ferguson Goes Off on Eddie Alvarez Over 'Made-Up' Title
Justin Golightly - December 16, 2017
When Eddie Alvarez knocked out Justin Gaethje with a brutal knee after their UFC 218 war, in his mind, he won the unofficial Most Violent UFC title. It was something that he created due to limbo at lightweight and the nature of the fight he had before him. However, there is a real belt in the division, or at least an interim, held by Tony Ferguson. The interim lightweight champ Ferguson wasn’t impressed, by the fight are the ‘title’ Alvarez boasts about. He took to Twitter to tell Alvarez what he thought and didn’t hold back one bit. …Eddie Alvarez was quick to respond though. I would rip your skinny body apart if I cared to fight you , but I don’t care to fight You soo … Merry Christmas “Champ” 😂😂😂
Savage Justin Gaethje Proud to Have Lost to Eddie Alvarez by a Knockout
Justin Golightly - December 14, 2017
18 wins. 15 finishes. No equal for six years. That is, until Justin Gaethje ended up meeting former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. It was the bloody war that the UFC and those two savages promised us. There was no gold on the line, but the added stipulation of an unofficial violence title up for grabs was taken deadly serious. After a performance full of grit and pure determination, his granite chin finally gave out with a brutal knee. Any other fighter would be kicking himself, but not Justin Gaethje. He’d rather go out like that than lose by a decision any day, which should come at no surprise to anyone. “I’m glad I got knocked out instead of going to a decision and losing because that’s not the way I want to lose. I’m happy with my performance. I feel like I won because I tried so hard. My preparation was there and ultimately I went out and did what I go to do and that’s entertain people and entertain myself really. And I had fun. I did some major damage to [Eddie Alvarez’s] lead leg in that first round. He did a good job of putting his hands on me but definitely didn’t do a lot of damage. He definitely beat me in that second round and in the third round, I thought it was a close fight. If it would have went to the scorecards, I’m sure he would have got it because of the takedown or something and he was a little bit more active with punches but I cause a lot of damage when I do land my strikes and it’s hard to judge that.”
VIDEO | Paul Felder Has Strong Criticisms Over The UFC's Unofficial Most Violent Title
Justin Golightly - December 14, 2017
Eddie Alvarez’s fight with Justin Gaethje came and went and it was everything they said it would be and more. Leading up to the fight, Alvarez created an unofficial title forged in violence that would be up for grabs in their UFC 218 bout. His jaw swollen like it contained a softball, Alvarez captured that invisible belt and put himself back in title contention for the lightweight strap. The brutal and grueling war these two put on, while crowd-pleasing, had Paul Felder looking at things in a completely different way. …These guys are potentially damaging their careers. “That’s the goal, right? Hit and don’t get hit. That’s why I train so hard in camp and I spar and we do everything so specifically because I want to get in there and I want get the job done. […] I’m always prepared for a three-round war, but I’m just not trying to be in them. You’ve got Eddie [Alvarez], who’s trying to be the ‘Most Violent Guy,’ and [Justin] Gaethje, who’s looking for an equal. Go ahead. You guys can go and fight over that. Meanwhile, I’ll silently be knocking everyone out and working my way to the top 10, top five, and sneak right in there and take that title shot from you guys.”
PHOTO | Dustin Poirier Has a Christmas Present for Eddie Alvarez
Justin Golightly - December 13, 2017
Eddie Alvarez knows that the title picture at lightweight is all jumbled up so he just invented his own belt. It’s not gold, you don’t wear it, but it already has a challenger. Alvarez declared that he took the UFC Most Violent title away from Justin Gaethje at UFC 218, a title that Dustin Poirier wants to pry out of his hands. He’s wanted a rematch with Alvarez ever since their fight ended with an illegal strike and has been rallying for it ever since. He’s done everything he can to get Alvarez to take the fight, now he’s even offered his former opponent a Christmas present. Took my time today and wrapped your Christmas presents nice @Ealvarezfight pic.twitter.com/rneFy3fCpC
Dustin Poirier Wants to Give Another Boxing Lesson to 'Piece of Sh-t' Eddie Alvarez
Justin Golightly - December 7, 2017
Eddie Alvarez is now at the top of the lightweight rankings and knocking on the door for another title shot after a Fight of the Night performance against Justin Gaethje. However, there is more than just the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Edson Barboza who stands between Alvarez and either interim or undisputed gold. Lurking in the shadows and pacing for another crack at Alvarez is Dustin Poirier. At UFC 211, Poirier believes he was track for a big victory of his own until an illegal knee by Alvarez ended their fight. It’s something Poirier isn’t going to let go, especially now that the ‘Most Violent’ nickname is on the line. “I don’t like [Eddie Alvarez] personally. I used to be a big fan of him, I still respect his fighting style. He’s a dog, he’s a warrior, he’s down but never out in fights. I believe that truly. But I used to really respect the guy and look up to him. Now he’s a piece of sh-t. The way he’s lied to himself and lied to people and said stuff about me and about the fight. So, I don’t have any respect for the guy. Eddie went in there with a good game plan [in the fight with Justin Gaethje], used good body work and like I said real good in and out movement. Gaethje stands real flat-footed and if move in and out on a guy like that, you can really finesse him.”
