Top featherweight contender Edson Barboza said he wants a top-six opponent in what will be the final fight of his current deal with the UFC. One of the most exciting fighters in MMA, Barboza has been in the UFC for a decade now, with his promotional debut coming back in November 2010 when he defeated Mike Lullo via leg kick TKO at UFC 123. For the past 10 years, Barboza has been a staple of the UFC roster, becoming a top contender at lightweight for many years before moving down to featherweight in 2020 and becoming a top-15 fighter in a second weight class this year.

UFC featherweight contender Edson Barboza says he is open to a trilogy fight with top lightweight Paul Felder in the near future. Barboza defeated Makwan Amirkhani via unanimous decision in the co-main event of UFC Fight Island 5 to snap a three-fight losing skid. One of those losses came against Felder when Barboza dropped a highly-controversial split decision to his rival at UFC 242. Barboza and Felder previously met at UFC on FOX: Dillashaw vs. Barao 2 in 2015, so the pair are 1-1 against each other, and both have spoken about a potential trilogy fight in the past.

Edson Barboza will now face off against Makwan Amirkhani on October 10 after Sodiq Yusuff was forced to withdraw from their scheduled bout. MMA Junkie has confirmed the initial report from Combate that Yusuff will no longer be able to take on Barboza as he has pulled out due to undisclosed reasons. The man who will be replacing him, Amirkhani, has won three of his last four fights with his latest victory coming against Danny Henry at UFC 251.

A featherweight firefight between two high-level strikers in Edson Barboza and Sodiq Yusuff has been booked for an upcoming UFC event. As previously reported, Barboza was expected to fight on the October 10 UFC Fight Night event set to take place on Fight Island. His opponent was supposed to be Jeremy Stephens, but according to a report from Combate, Stephens did not feel he had enough time to make the 145lbs limit safely. Instead, the UFC has found a new opponent for Barboza, and he will take on Yusuff in what should be a fantastic fight.

According to a report from Combate, the UFC is currently negotiating a fight between Barboza and Stephens to take place on October 3. The venue and location of the event have not yet been confirmed. Although both fighters have competed at lightweight in the past, this potential pairing would have the two veterans meet in a featherweight bout.

Barboza has been teasing a move down to 145lbs for a few months now, and he will get the chance to fight a top-10 ranked opponent when he takes on Emmett at UFC on ESPN+ 32, taking place on May 2 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It seems likely that Barboza vs. Emmett will be a main card bout for the event headlined by middleweights Chris Weidman and Jack Hermansson.
