Eddie Alvarez explains why he picked Dustin Poirier to fight at UFC 211

Eddie Alvarez

One of the most exciting fighters in the history of mixed martial arts, Eddie Alvarez, will return to the octagon at next month’s highly anticipated UFC 211 event in Dallas, Texas.

The former UFC lightweight champion of the world, Alvarez, recently sat down with BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor where he discussed a number of different topics surrounding his upcoming scrap with Dustin Poirier.

Prior to being booked for his UFC 211 fight with Dustin Poirier, Eddie Alvarez was rumored to be in discussions for a possible fight with Nate Diaz, as well as a potential matchup with Michael Chiesa.

Taylor asked Eddie why he ended up choosing to fight “The Diamond” in Dallas.

“For me the formula is always the same. It is the biggest fight that we can get. Right now the (lightweight) division is so locked up that there is not really anybody to fight. You know Dustin is coming off of a big win over Jim Miller. So yea, he just happened to be the biggest available name. I don’t think there was anyone else who was as big of a name who was available right now. Dustin’s style always makes for exciting fights. A lot of people like to watch him so… I am always looking for the biggest possible fight that is going to draw the most attention. This was the one that was available.”

Since joining the UFC ranks, all five opponents that Alvarez has faced have either been champions or former title challengers. Eddie’s fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 211 will put an end to that streak. Taylor asked Eddie how he felt Poirier matched up to his previous UFC opponents.

“I think Dustin Poirier fancies himself a champion. He just doesn’t have a belt. He thinks he can become champion someday so that will have to do.”
