EXCLUSIVE |Aljamain Sterling on Pedro Munhoz: ‘Eventually, he’s going to have to face me’
If the UFC is preparing to make a bantamweight title fight between Marlon Moraes and flyweight champion Henry Cejudo as Dana White said they were, Aljamain Sterling will be looking for an opponent, and Pedro Munhoz might be the one.
Munhoz most recently defeated former champion Cody Garbrandt at UFC 235 and finds himself on a three-fight winning streak, the same as Aljamain Sterling. With a potential title fight between Cejudo and Moraes possibly in the works, a matchup between Sterling and Munhoz makes sense for both sides.
In an interview with BJPenn.com, Aljamain Sterling responded to an interview Munhoz did with MMA Fighting, where Munhoz called out “FunkMaster” saying that he doesn’t believe Sterling would be an interesting fight, because fans want to see a dog fight.
“You know, I like Pedro but I think he’s a little drunk or a little high or something when he was giving that interview. I’m not sure who his PR guy is, but clearly ill-advised. He clearly didn’t watch my last fight, I didn’t need a single takedown to win that fight, I dominated. He fought Rivera, and look how he came out of that fight. He’s been dropped in about every single UFC fight he’s had.”
“Outside of that, if you compare the competition of who we’ve fought, I think my resume speaks for itself. I think what he’s doing he’s trying to avoid the tough fight. I think I’m starting to become the Ben Askren of this weight class, people are realizing that I’m the toughest matchup no matter where the fight goes. So if that’s what he wants to be his cop-out, I guess whatever works for him, but I ain’t going nowhere so, eventually he’s going to have to face me.”
Aljamain Sterling has taken to Twitter twice recently to express his interest in fighting Munhoz, although there has been no word on the UFC’s plans for either fighter.
As Sterling said, he will control what he can control right now, and if that means Pedro Munhoz is next, then has found his next opponent.
