Brock Lesnar is back. Well, almost.

Shortly after Daniel Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic to capture the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 226, we learned that Lesnar is likely to be Cormier’s first challenger as champ. The fight will happen just as soon as Lesnar gets his lingering USADA suspension squared away.

Because Lesnar is currently tied up with USADA, of course, his receiving a UFC title shot has been the subject of much controversy. Given that he’s also winless since 2010, its easy to understand why some fans and fighters disapprove of his getting the opportunity.

In the opinion of UFC interim welterweight champ Colby Covington, Lesnar deserves the opportunity. That being said, he thinks Lesnar is just trying to get out of the WWE fold before he crosses paths with Covington’s American Top Team stablemate Bobby Lashley.

“He was a former UFC champion at heavyweight, so he deserves a shot, but there’s a reason that Brock Lesnar left the WWE, [why] he’s leaving and he’s coming to the UFC,” Covington said on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio. “My good buddy Bobby Lashley, he’s over in the WWE now, and there’s a reason Vince McMahon is sending Brock Lesnar to the UFC, because he doesn’t wanna see Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania in the WWE. I think that would be the greatest match ever. Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman versus Dan Lambert and American Top Team and Bobby Lashley. It needs to happen at WrestleMania…”

“110%, that’s the reason,” Covington added. “I think he’s a little bit scared of Bobby. Finally another world class wrestler, and big, strong guy like him that could keep up with him in the ring. So, I think he’s ducking Bobby Lashley in WWE, and that’s why he wants to come to the UFC. And make no mistake about it, Brock versus DC in the UFC is one of the greatest — it’s the greatest fight ever. But Brock versus Bobby Lashley in WWE is the greatest sell ever in the WWE history. Look at their managers behind them that will be on the mics.”

“Those guys shoot one liners better than anybody. Their promo skills are second to none, and that’s Paul Heyman for Brock Lesnar, and Dan Lambert for Bobby Lashley.”
