EXCLUSIVE | Colby Covington assures he isn’t mimicking “coked-up little leprechaun” Conor McGregor
In the span of a year, Colby Covington has become known as one of the UFC’s biggest trash talkers. The American, who battles Rafael dos Anjos for interim welterweight gold at UFC 225 this June 9, is constantly generating headlines with his words.
Covington’s propensity for venomous trash talk has caused several members of the MMA community to suggest he’s mimicking Conor McGregor‘s schtick.
Take these comments from former UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping, for example:
“[Covington] hasn’t got anywhere yet,” Bisping said on a recent episode of MMA Roasted. “He’s siting at that press conference trying to talk shit and he’s just trying to be Conor McGregor.”
Speaking on the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio, however, Covington assured that he’s not borrowing McGregor’s persona. He’s not copying Chael Sonnen, either.
“People, they wanna say I’m mimicking McGregor, I’m mimicking Chael Sonnen,” Covington told host Jason Kindschy. “I’m not trying to be anything like them. Does it look like I’m trying to get followers or I’m trying to get fans? I don’t care. I’m not trying to make people happy. I don’t care. You’re gonna be mad, but you will tune in to see me fight ’cause you wanna see me lose. At the end of the day, all these people that wanna say I’m trying to mimic another person, no. I’m unique in my own way. No one’s ever done and went the route I’ve went, full super villain here.”
Shortly thereafter, Covington gave his thoughts on Conor McGregor’s infamous April rampage in Brooklyn. To remind, Covington offered to track the Irishman down, during the brief period that he was on the lamb in New York.

“He’s a coked-up little Leprechaun,” Covington said. “He’s making stupid mistakes, but the thing is, Jason, is that he noticed that King Colby was in the media a lot and in the headlines, and he was losing attention, so he was just trying to steal the headlines back. But at the end of the day, as soon as I put out my tweet that King Colby the bounty hunter was looking for him, he turned himself in. He knows he didn’t wanna get his hands dirty with me.”
