EXCLUSIVE | Colby Covington on Ben Askren’s win over Robbie Lawler: ‘It seemed like the fix was in’

At UFC 235, Ben Askren made his highly-anticipated debut, when he took on Robbie Lawler.

Askren, who is undefeated, was looking to show he is the best in the world. However, early on, ‘Funky’ was in a lot of trouble when Lawler slammed him on his head.

Ultimately, Askren somehow survived and then secured a bulldog choke and submitted Lawler, although it was controversial.

Even though some believe it was controversial, Askren still got a win in the UFC, but Colby Covington is still not impressed by his performance. Rather, Covington believes Askren was gifted a win by Herb Dean.

“Yeah, I can’t believe that Herb Dean saved Ben Askren’s life. He was literally gonna die,” Covington said on the latest stacked episode of BJPENN Radio. “He saved his life, man. Honestly, Ben Askren should give his Hodge Trophy to Robbie Lawler because Robbie Lawler took him down more times Than he took him down and he had to literally finish the dead if it wasn’t for Herb Dean saving himself. It was a completely ill-advised stoppage and who knows man? Maybe the fix was in, it seemed like the fix was in that night.”

Following Askren’s win, he saw Covington backstage and asked him when he was going to call him out. ‘Chaos’ was quick with an answer, stating he wants Askren to get a ‘real’ win before the two talk about potentially fighting each other.

“Yep, that was the end of it, you know? Brett Okamoto was sitting right there and he heard it all,” Covington explained. “I just said ‘yo get a win man, you wanna come to the top of the mountain, no problem I’ll kick you right back to the bottom, but come on man, you gotta earn your way up. I’m not gonna help you and give you a hand up. You gotta earn your way up.’ I let him know, get a win in the UFC and then we can talk, you’re obviously the easiest fight in the UFC, you don’t know how to throw a punch and your wrestling sucks. You’ve got dropped on your head by Robbie Lawler so, you know, boom roasted. There ya go, buddy.”
