EXCLUSIVE | Colby Covington shares scorecard for “super epic” Whittaker vs. Romero fight

Shortly after Colby Covington captured the interim welterweight title with a decision defeat of Rafael dos Anjos, he watched his American Top Team stablemate Yoel Romero take on UFC middleweight champ Robert Whittaker.

In the end, Romero lost a competitive and somewhat controversial decision to Whittaker. In Covington’s eyes, however, the judges were a little off. He feels Romero did enough to win.

“He dropped Whittaker multiple times,” Covington said on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio. “He had Whittaker in danger multiple times, but I don’t know. I don’t know what the judges are thinking. That’s what sucks about our judging system. You just never know what’s gonna happen when you leave it in the judge’s hands.”

While Covington feels his teammate deserved the win, he was expecting the judges to deem the fight a draw. Whatever the case, however, he feels Romero and Whittaker are far and away the best middleweights alive, and he’d happily watch them fight a third time.

“I was sitting backstage, sitting next to Megan Olivi, and she was like ‘Oh, how do you think [it will be] scored? How’d you score?’. I was like, ‘honestly, I think it’s gonna be a draw. There’s gotta be a 10-8 round in there for Yoel.’ He dropped him so many times, but Whittaker had a lot more significant strikes, and the strike count was on Whittaker’s side. So it was a really evenly-matched fight, and those are definitely the two best middleweights in the world, so I’d love to see them throw down again. Both fights were super epic fights, so I’m sure the fans wanna see it again, too.”

If Whittaker and Romero don’t fight for a third time, Covington has designs to move up to middleweight and challenge Whittaker himself — something he’s been considering for awhile.

“I’m definitely looking at that fight,” he said. “If that’s a big money fight that’s gonna draw, that’s the fight I’m looking at. His style matches up perfect for me. He won’t stand with my pace, trust me. I train with middleweights, I train with light heavyweights. They all say the same thing, my pace is just too much. My cardio, my lungs are just way too much for anybody, so that’s definitely a fight I’m looking at in the near future.”
