EXCLUSIVE | Jorge Masvidal is down to fight Leon Edwards if Usman and Magny aren’t available

Shortly after he defeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone by decision in the main of UFC Singapore, Leon Edwards called for a fight with long-time welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal.

“At the time, he was No. 6 in the rankings and I was going down in the rankings and everyone else was matched up, so why not take out another old gun?” Edwards said, explaining why he called out Masvidal. “Masvidal, he’s been around again, a long time, so why not go in there and take him out?”

Masvidal quickly responded to this call-out, assuring that he’s down to fight the rising British contender Edwards. That being said, he hasn’t heard anything from the UFC about this potential matchup just yet.

“There’s absolutely no news yet,” Masvidal said on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio. “My management has not been contacted on this fight, or a date either, so we’re just waiting until we get a date at least for it.”

That being said, Masvidal maintains that he’s up for fighting Edwards — but only if Edwards is the highest-ranked opponent available. If something better comes along, he’ll take it.

“If that is the biggest ranked guy I can get my hands on than that’s who it is,” Masvidal said. “Doesn’t really matter. If they were to offer me a number 5 dude, number 4 dude, of course I’m gonna say yes to that over Leon.”

One potential fight that would quickly cause Jorge Masvidal to forget about Leon Edwards is Kamaru Usman. Neil Magny is another opponent he’s wanted for some time. Unfortunately, he doubts either of these fights will happen.

“Well, if I could get my hands on Usman, I’d love it, but I know he’s not going to fight me,” Masvidal said. “So I want to talk, like, real fights that could possibly happen, not fantasy files, you know? So I don’t know, man. Magny would be a perfect fight, because he’s number 7, but he won’t fight me, at 170, at 155, at no weight.”

“Usman said that I didn’t want to fight him,” he added. “I’ve heard a lot of wild tales, that’s one of the wildest ones I’ve heard. This guy comes straight out of Wild Wild West, you know? This guy, no, he’s … I don’t know if he’s bi-polar, delusional … When was I offered a fight with you and I turned it down?”

Whoever ends up serving as his next opponent, Jorge Masvidal is just hoping to fight again soon.

“I’m here,” he said. “Any of the other top 10s hearing this, have your management contact my management, we don’t have to go to Twitter wars, and who’s got the nicer car, and whatever. I could care less. Let’s just get in the cage and settle it, man.”
