Exclusive | Jorge Masvidal plans to “take heads off” following “horrible fight” with Wonderboy

Perennial UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal is working on some “new things” following most recent setback to former two-time title challenger Stephen Thompson at November’s UFC 217 event in New York.

Gamebred” recently sat down with BJ PENN Radio where he discussed his disappointing loss to “Wonderboy” and how he plans on rebounding in a big way in his next fight, which he hopes will take place later this summer.

“That was one of the worst performances of my career. Psychologically, physically, everything. You know just … I wasn’t where I needed to be at and I didn’t stick to the game plan either. The game plan was if he’s running too much, if things ain’t clicking and I’m not feeling the pressure, then I just use the wrestling that I’ve acquired over the years and just take him down and beat him up. I didn’t stick to the plan. I tried to knock him out and it just made for a horrible fight, man. One of my worst fights ever.”

Masvidal doesn’t want to take anything away from Thompson’s performance, who he believed did a great job in their fight at UFC 217. In fact, Jorge is simply hoping to have an eventual rematch with “Wonderboy” sometime down the road.

“I don’t want to take anything away from him (Thompson). He had a great performance. I just hope, you know I’ve never had a rematch, so I’m not calling for a rematch now… But I will get on the money horse, win a couple fights and get a rematch with him. It’s just a fight that I know I could win. Just a slight mistake here, a slight mistake there, and those led to my demise.”

Masvidal is currently work on some “new things” and plans on sharpening his tools so that he can “take heads off” going forward.

“I’m in the gym, working on new things. But I’m just taking some time off (from fighting). I don’t want to take a fight any time soon. Just work on the new good things I’m doing. I’m just sharpening my tools. Sometimes you don’t have that time to do that when you gotta fight already, so I’ve just been getting better, man. I told the UFC I’m not fighting until June or July. Maybe even as late as August.”

“Gamebred” continued:

“Like I said man when July comes around it’s on. I know a couple of fights got booked recently so I don’t know what the landscape will be like in July, but what I do know is whoever it is I’m going to take their heads off, that’s what it is.”
