EXCLUSIVE | Stephen Thompson shuts down the talk of Michael Bisping vs. Tyron Woodley
Top UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson battled division champion Tyron Woodley to a majority draw at UFC 205 this past November in New York.
Immediately following the five-round war, which was voted “fight of the night”, UFC president Dana White stated that an immediate rematch between Woodley and Thompson would be put together by the promotion.
However, since that time there has been talks of Woodley potentially fighting other opponents including former Strikeforce title holder Nick Diaz. The fight between Nick and Tyron was eventually ruled out after Diaz declined the offer due to contract issues. (See that story here).
Most recently a video surfaced of Woodley and current UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping negotiating a possible super fight for the month of May.
Stephen Thompson, who is hoping to return at March’s UFC 209 event in Las Vegas against “T-Wood”, recently joined host Chris Taylor on BJPENN.com’s Rapid Fire segment.
Taylor asked Thompson to share his thoughts on current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley trying to negotiate a super fight with current middleweight title holder Michael Bisping. “Wonderboy” responded with the following essentially shutting down any hopes of the Bisping vs. Woodley fight:
“Well you know I kind of got the vibe that they were just joking around but you never know. Especially nowadays you see these super fights going on in different weight classes. But I kind of knew that they were just joking around. Bisping’s manager is also my manager as well. So we kind of had the inside scoop as to what was really going on. But with that said, as soon as we saw (the video) we quickly followed up with my manager and were like ‘hey man what is going on?’ and he told us not to worry because nothing is actually going to happen with that.”
He continued:
“Of course, after me and Woodley face off again and settle our unfinished business. You know, Tyron is a big boy man. He walks around at about 200-pounds, so that (Bisping vs. Woodley) would still be an exciting fight I think. But after I get my rematch that can happen. Obviously.” Thompson said laughing.
