EXCLUSIVE | Tyron Woodley is 3000% sure that “Papa Thompson” is responsible for his son becoming a “Twitter Warrior”
Last month we reported that a UFC welterweight title fight rematch between top contender Stephen Thompson and current title holder Tyron Woodley was in the works for March’s UFC 209 pay-per-view event in Las Vegas.
Yesterday that title fight rematch became official, as Tyron Woodley announced on his podcast that he had accepted a rematch with “Wonderboy” for the March 4 event.
Prior to accepting the rematch with Stephen Thompson at UFC 209, Woodley had actually offered a title fight to surging welterweight contender Demian Maia on Twitter.
Hey @demianmaia what you got going on March 4th 2017? I'm free #ufc209 @ufc Las Vegas! Since people want me to fight who "Deserves" a shot.

However, shortly after offering Demian Maia the title fight, Woodley opted to grant Thompson his wish and sign on to rematch “Wonerboy” at UFC 209.
“The Chosen One” explained how he reversed the decision after listening to Thomspon’s interview on “The MMA Hour” to our very own Chris Taylor on Monday’s edition of BJPENN.com’s Rapid Fire:
“At first I was like since he (Stephen Thompson) is talking about deserving, let’s give the title shot to someone who is deserving like Demian Maia. If that is what you want to do then let’s give it up to the most deserving and that is Demian Maia. But then he started going off on the MMA Hour show and sending out tweets so I finally had enough.”
He continued:
“I really just think his dad just took his phone because he never really said a peep before and then all of a sudden he becomes this Twitter warrior. So I am three thousand percent sure that Papa Thompson just grabbed his phone and said ‘Let me just show you how to do this son. Let me get on here and try and ruffle some feathers.'”
Woodley also shared the following message for his fans.
“Yea man I want to tell all the fans to make sure to check out ‘The Champ Life’, we did a great job of covering UFC 207. New Years Eve Turnup with Ludacris with me and my man Demetrious Johnson, we got to hang out as well and give back to the community. So it shows every side of the coin. You know giving back to the community, that we like to go out and have a good time in our off-time, and also being at the fights. So make sure you check out ‘The Champ Life’ and also check out ‘The Morning Wood show’, I go a little more ‘rated R’ on how I feel about Wonderboy so check that out.”
Woodley and Thompson first met at November’s historic UFC 205 event in New York and after five-rounds of action the fight was ruled a majority draw by the judges in attendance.
Shortly after the fight, UFC president Dana White announced that an immediate rematch would be booked to settle the score and now fight fans have that date, March 4 in Las Vegas.
Prior to his draw with Woodley, Thompson was riding an impressive seven-fight win streak which included victories over Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger.
Meanwhile, prior to his five-round war with “Wonderboy”, Tyron Woodley was coming off a first-round knockout victory over Robbie Lawler which earned “The Chosen One” the UFC’s coveted welterweight strap. Woodley’s last loss came at UFC 174 in 2014 against former UFC title challenger Rory MacDonald via decision.
