EXCLUSIVE | Yoel Romero discusses the passing of former Cuban President Fidel Castro
Cuban sensation Yoel Romero scored one of the most electrifying knockouts of 2016 when he devastated former division title holder Chris Weidman with a flying knee on the main card of November’s UFC 205 event in New York.
With the win, “The Soldier of God” became the UFC 185-pound divisions top contender and secured himself a future title shot with current champion Michael “The Count” Bisping.
The UFC’s top UFC middleweight contender sat down with BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor on Friday’s episode of Rapid Fire where he discussed a number of different topics including the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro.
“Yes you can touch on any subject you want my friend,” Romero stated. “First and foremost, you know things that happen in this world, things happen and nothing happens without the design of god. Who am I to judge someone or bless someone if that is up to God to do. If God allowed the Jews to suffer so many exiles, you know he did it for a reason. Even if we are in agreeance or not, God allowed it. Whether if we understand it or not, God allowed it. The same thing happened with Fidel Castro.”
Fidel Castro passed away at the age of 90 on November 25, 2016, just 20 days after Romero’s historic victory over Chris Weidman at UFC 205.
Castro had held on to power longer than any other living national leader excluding Queen Elizabeth II. Fidel’s importance in the 20th century was far more influential than anyone could have predicted coming from the head of state of a Caribbean island nation of just 11 million people.
The revolutionary politician, Castro, will forever be remembered as the man who brought the Cold War to the Western Hemisphere in 1959. Fidel defied the United States for nearly half a century as Cuba’s leader.
As for Yoel Romero, the former Olympic silver medalist is hoping to add a UFC championship to his trophy case when he battles current UFC middleweight title holder Michael Bisping later this year.
Who do you think will prove victorious when current UFC middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping and top contender Yoel “The Soldier of God” Romero square off? Sound off PENN Nation!
