JT Torres

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, JT Torres, recently spoke to BJPENN.COM about his grappling career and a once in a lifetime experience that he’s gearing up for on August 23, 2015. The cool thing about that is, well, you can be apart of that experience with him.

Torres, who went up against Rory McDonald at Metamoris 5, will be one of six world-renowned Jiu-Jitsu practitioners teaching on Grappler’s Escape 2015. If you are not familiar with Grappler’s Escape, here’s the rundown:

• 1 luxurious Carnival Cruise Ship
• 5 Days/6 Nights of top-level BJJ Training and Learning Experiences
• 6 BJJ instructors from 3 of the best Academies

Yes ladies and gentleman, it’s a cruise where you get to train Jiu-Jitsu with some of the biggest names in the game, including Torres who spoke with us about his own experiences training BJJ.

“Right from the start, when I fell in love with the sport, I did it 24 hours and 7 days a week. If I couldn’t get to the academy—which I couldn’t, I was probably getting to the academy maybe twice a week, as much as my dad could take me—the other times I would spend on YouTube or watching DVD’s. I was constantly training, even if I wasn’t on the mat, constantly training. So I felt that really helped me, and I love to compete, I loved to compete from the start, so I competed a lot, which helped me progress through the belts a lot faster I felt, and yeah, I ended up getting my Black Belt pretty quickly, and its been about 6 years now that I’ve been a Black Belt. So I’ve got a good amount of experience underneath my belt, and it’s pretty awesome man, pretty awesome journey I’ve had so far.”

This isn’t an opportunity that comes up very often and there are a limited number of available spots, with tickets going fast. The cruise sets sail on August 23, 2015 from the Port of Miami and will make its way to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Along with the high-level BJJ instructional courses, the cruise will feature all of the activities and experiences of a normal cruise trip, including, touring islands, beach time, diving and snorkeling etc.

Torres, who represents Atos Jiu-Jitsu, heard about the cruise and immediately jumped at the chance to be apart of it.

“I got a phone call from my professor, Andre Galvao, and [he was] kind of telling me more and more about this Jiu-Jitsu cruise that he was invited to and they were possibly interested in having me come on there and teach, and when I heard that I was all over it. I said, ‘What? A cruise where I get to go on and teach?’ I said, ‘Yeah, sign me up, where do I sign up?’ So I got in contact with Grappler’s Escape, and they have an awesome vision, and it’s an amazing thing that they’re doing and that’s how I ended up with them.”

Torres leapt at the opportunity to be apart of the cruise and if you have any interest in training with top-level practitioners while also enjoying a well needed vacation, then you should too. Along with Torres, participants will also learn from Saulo Ribeiro and Xande Ribeiro from Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu, Andre Galvao and Angelica Galvao from Atos Jiu-Jitsu and Felicia Oh from Jean Jacque Machado Academy. While you’re training you might happen to see Torres rolling right along with you on the mats.

“I’m excited for myself as a student as well, I’m going to be attending the other guy’s classes. Saul Ribiero, his brother Xande Ribiero, even my professor Andre Galvao. I’m going to be going to their classes as well, just like the other students, you know? When I have some free time. I’m excited to learn too, I’m excited to teach, and learn and train with everyone and enjoy the vacation at the same time.”

No matter your skill level, Grappler’s Escape will feature learning opportunities for you to advance your BJJ knowledge and learn from the best. How many times in your life will you be able to train Jiu-Jitsu with some of the best while still having fun on a cruise vacation? Grab your tickets before they’re gone and live life to the fullest while training in the sport you love.

“My hopes for the students that are attending is that I can give them some Jiu-Jitsu that they can add to their games right away, that can possibly maybe help their games improve for competition or for just training or whatever it is. I just want them to walk away with something that’s going to improve their Jiu-Jitsu, bring it to the next level, on and off the mats, you know? That’s very important too, on and off the mats. Not just mat-work and all that, but the way they carry themselves off the mat, what you’re doing outside Jiu-Jitsu, the way you’re eating, you know all those kinds of things. I want to really touch on all subjects of life involving Jiu-Jitsu if that’s what you really want to do.”

And if that really is what you want to do then don’t hesitate to jump on this opportunity. You’ll find all the information you need below in order to book your trip or learn more about Grappler’s Escape.
