EXCLUSIVE | Korean Zombie reveals who he wants to fight next
Last weekend, the UFC touched down in Houston, Texas with its annual Super Bowl weekend card. This year, the card was headlined by an intriguing featherweight showdown. In one corner, we had Dennis Bermudez. In the other, we had Chan Sung Jung – more widely known as “The Korean Zombie” – who was returning from a hiatus of more than three years.
Despite his lengthy layoff, which was due in large part to the two years of mandatory military service required of all South Korean men, the Korean Zombie looked better than ever in this fight, knocking his foe out with a rocket-fuelled uppercut in the very first round. With this emphatic win, fans began to drool over the many exciting matchup options that exist for him in the UFC featherweight division, from Cub Swanson, to Yair Rodriguez, to Jeremy Stephens.
In Jung’s perfect world, however, the ideal next step would be a fight with interim featherweight champion Max Holloway. He explained this desire to Chris Taylor on a recent episode of BJPENN.com’s Rapid Fire, speaking through his manager and translator Brian Rhee.
“I’d like to fight Max Holloway,” the fan favorite undead fighter explained. “I think that would be a great fight, but I don’t know if the UFC would make that match up right now. But, that’s really the fight I want. Outside of that, I don’t really have a specific opponent in mind. I just want to fight the best guys possible. I want to do whatever I have to, in order to reach my goal of becoming the champion. There are a lot of potentially great match ups for me in the featherweight division right now, so just as long as I’m moving up the ladder, I’d be happy. I’m not a fighter who turns down fights.”
While Jung is hoping for a fight with Holloway, however, he admitted that he believes Holloway will lose to undisputed champ Jose Aldo if their long-discussed title unification bout goes ahead as planned.
“I’d have to go with Aldo in that fight,” he said. “Holloway is on a roll, and he’s a great fighter, so it would be a tough fight, for sure. That’s a really tough call to make.”
