Cain Velasquez interview

The UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, is preparing for his fight with interim champ Fabricio Werdum.

Velasquez recently talked with BJPENN.COM’s Layzie The Savage about preparing for the fight and his mindset going into all of his bouts.

The champ said he has been getting ready for Werdum by training a lot more jiu-jitsu because of Werdum’s high-level submission skills.

“As far as stuff that I’m doing different for this camp,” said Velasquez, “I’m just doing more of the jiu-jitsu stuff. I know Fabricio Werdum is good everywhere, but he’s one of the best in jiu-jitsu. So, definitely working to be in that position because we don’t work to not be in that position, we work to be in that position, so that if we’re there in the fight then we’re going to be ready.”

This doesnt mean we are going to see a completely different Cain in there. According to the fighter, his style of always moving forward and pushing the pace will always be his gameplan, no matter who he’s fighting.

“We’re keeping the same type of style,” mentioned the champ, “The same gameplan as far as going forward, a lot of pressure, a lot of action. So that we’ll never change, I think my style of fighting will always be a lot of pressure going forward.”

Even though Velasquez has been dominant in so many of his performances, he still goes into every fight feeling like the underdog. He says it actually helps him to think that way.

“I always picture myself as an underdog every time I go in. I feel like that really gets me ready, gets me hungry every time I’m here at practice. It makes me work harder.”
