BREAKING | Max Holloway Injured, Out of Frankie Edgar Fight at UFC 222

By Justin Golightly - February 3, 2018

There is a yin and a yang to everything. The universe must always balance itself. The MMA gods must have pulled out all the stops to make the three gigantic super fights expected for 2018. By booking Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic – and attempting to put together fights with Demetrious Johnson, TJ Dillashaw, Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes – it was inevitable something had to go. According to a breaking report, Max Holloway suffered and undisclosed injury that will take him out of his title defense against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222.

“According to sources, featherweight champion Max Holloway has suffered an injury that will prevent him from defending his title against Frankie Edgar. The UFC has not officially pulled Holloway from the event, but is expected to do so shortly. The promotion is already in the process of exploring other options for its main event.”as reported by Brett Okamoto via ESPN.

It looks like these two just aren’t destined to fight each other. They were originally supposed to fight at UFC 218, but Frankie Edgar had to pull out due to an injured orbital. Jose Aldo stepped in to face Max Holloway and it resulted in back-t0-back wins over the former featherweight king. The fight with Edgar was rebooked for UFC 222, but this time it’s Max Holloway who has suffered a set back. The UFC is currently trying to put together another main event, whether that be a replacement for Holloway or another fight altogether is unknown at this time.

You have to feel for Frankie Edgar, who is on a two-fight win streak and was getting his fourth shot at the featherweight title if you count the bouts that were canceled. Will the UFC implement yet another interim title if Edgar stays on the card? Brian Ortega or Cub Swanson potentially stepping in would be a good replacement if the fight isn’t scrapped.
