Frankie Edgar on Michael Chandler fighting Conor McGregor at middleweight: “I’m saying Chandler all the way”

Frankie Edgar has weighed in on the rumored middleweight fight between Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor.

It was on New Year’s Eve that ‘Notorious’ took to ‘X‘ with a video announcement stating that he would be returning to action on June 29 at International Fight Week for a middleweight bout with Michael Chandler.

“Ladies and gentlemen, a Happy New Year to you all. I’d like to announce the return date for myself, the Notorious Conor McGregor, for the greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas for International Fight Week on June 29. The opponent, Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler? 185 pounds (laughs).”

Conor McGregor’s announcement was quickly dismissed by UFC CEO Dana White, who shared the following response to the claims:

“Uhh, no,” White said when asked about McGregor fighting on June 29. “If and when Conor is ready to fight, you know we’ll announce it.”

Although no official date is set, it is assumed that when McGregor does return to the Octagon, he will be standing across the cage from Michael Chandler.

If that does prove to be the case, and the bout is at 185lbs, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar believes it will prove to be a rough night at the office for the Irishman.

“If this is at ‘85, I’m saying Chandler all the way,” Edgar said (h/t MMAFighting). “At ‘70, I think Conor has a shot in the first round, but I’m going Chandler.”

McGregor (22-6 MMA) has of course been on the sidelines since suffering a broken leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July of 2021.

The Irish star recently hinted at a possible return at UFC 300, but nothing has been confirmed by the UFC as of this time.
