Gegard Mousasi calls out recently reinstated Nick Diaz

Coming off one of the biggest wins of his UFC career, Gegard Mousasi made an unusual request for his next fight following his second round TKO of Vitor Belfort at UFC 204.

Mousasi, in the most polite way possible, called out former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, who was recently reinstated after a lengthy USADA suspension.

The number five ranked middleweight spoke about a fight with the elder Diaz brother today:

“Nick Diaz, that’s a good fight for me,” Mousasi said. “Nick Diaz, I think people would love that fight. I can ask for all the fights that I want to fight, but whether they give it to me is a different thing.

“Like even Vitor Belfort, I asked for that fight for a long time, you know? It wasn’t because I asked for the fight [that I got it], it was because Vitor asked for me. He asked the UFC he wants to fight me so they gave him the fight.”

Diaz hasn’t stepped foot into the octagon since dropping a decision loss to Anderson Silva, which was eventually overturned to a no contest following failed drugs tests by both men.

Before that, Diaz lost to Carlos Condit and Georges Saint Pierre for the interim welterweight and the undisputed welterweight titles.

Prior to Mousasi’s career-defining win over Belfort in a grudge match years in the making, the Dutchman knocked out dangerous striker Thiago “Maretta” Santos in the first round at UFC 200. With the exception of a TKO loss to Uriah Hall in Japan last year, Mousasi has won three of his last four fights, and is currently riding an impressive three-fight win streak.

With Diaz now eligible to fight again, there’s still no word on who the Stockton Slugger will take on next.
