Gegard Mousasi: I’m ready to be the UFC’s new middleweight champion

By Chris Taylor - May 17, 2016

Former Strikeforce title holder Gegard Mousasi (38-6-2 MMA) took to Twitter this evening to announce that he is ready to become the UFC’s new middleweight champion. His words:

Gegard Mousasi returns at Bellator 200

Mousasi’s title request came shortly after news broke that former UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman had suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 199 main event rematch with current title holder Luke Rockhold on June 4 in Los Angeles.

Mousasi is coming off a decision victory over former title challenger Thales Leites at UFC Fight Night 84. “The Dreamcatcher” is currently slated to face Derek Brunson at July’s UFC 200 event in Las Vegas.

Gegard’s request follows that of fellow middleweights Uriah Hall and Michael Bisping, who have also voiced their desire to step in and fight Rockhold on short-notice.

Would you like to see Mousasi square off with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, or is there another fighter you are hoping to step up and take the fight? Sound off PENN Nation.
