Georges St-Pierre discusses eye injury

While the UFC may have announced earlier this year that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight Michael Bisping for the undisputed UFC middleweight title, the fight never received an official date.

The UFC moved forward with the scrap, holding a press conference in Las Vegas where both St-Pierre and Bisping appeared on-stage to talk trash to one another while fielding questions from fans. Ultimately, St-Pierre revealed that he would be unable to fight over the summer, and would be willing to fight the champ closer to the end of the year. The champ then revealed that his knee injury was still not healed, and he too wouldn’t be able to fight until the end of the year.

Ultimately, the UFC opted to book an interim middleweight tile fight between Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker for this summer, which prompted UFC President Dana White to reveal that GSP would likely be returning at welterweight.

Despite that, Georges St-Pierre is still not 100% healthy to fight due to an eye injury, which he opened up about on The MMA Hour:

“When the fight got announced, the press conference, we knew we couldn’t fight in the summer – the UFC knew as well that I couldn’t fight in the summer. They knew that I had an eye injury, but we still did the press conference and I felt very uncomfortable during this whole time, you know as an athlete I wanted to tell what was going on but, you know if you look at every sport, you look at hockey for example, when an athlete these injuries, you never mention these injuries. ‘Oh he injured the upper body, the lower body part,’ or it doesn’t say anything at all. As athlete, for people who don’t understand why, I don’t want to talk about injuries. Because this can be used against us, but with the whole thing going on it turns out to be a very negative effect on me. So I needed to come out and tell the truth.”

St-Pierre went on to reveal that his agent advised him to keep quiet about the injury, however as more and more negative reports emerged regarding St-Pierre’s unwillingness to set a date, he finally decided it was time to speak up.

“It’s an eye injury, and it’s a long healing process. I had surgery done and everything is okay, there is a lapse of time I need to wait before I go back and train, especially because I take a risk of getting hit in the eyes because it can re-damage. My vision has not recovered 100% yet. It will be fine, everything is fine, I just need to wait for the lapse of time that the Dr asked me to wait for, and it’s in September I can start sparring again.”

Only time will tell when, or if, this fight will take place.
