Michael Bisping: Dana White told me 'GSP does not want to fight'

Tom Taylor - June 21, 2017

For a time, it looked as though UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping would next defend his title against former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Yet when St-Pierre revealed he wouldn’t be able to fight until the fall, and Bisping announced that he was recovering from knee surgery, this much-discussed fight was pushed to the back burner. Since then, UFC President Dana White has suggested that, if St-Pierre does return, it will not be to the middleweight division as originally planned, but instead to the welterweight division while he once ruled.

Hughes was driving a truck through a railroad crossing about 12 miles from his home in Illinois on Friday morning. Hughes was then airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Illinois.

bjpenndotcom - June 9, 2017

The ongoing saga of former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre‘s comeback fight continues to be a confusing one, as the former champion has now proclaimed that he is remaining “positive” in hopes of a fight with middleweight champion Michael Bisping happens, despite his eye injury sidelining him through the fall. While UFC President Dana White was quick to inform fans that the UFC wasn’t planning to wait until St-Pierre’s eye injury healed, ‘Rush’ revealed in a recent interview with TSN that he spoke to Dana White on the phone, and is confident that after their conversation, he will still have the opportunity to return to the Octagon and fight Micheal Bisping.

While the UFC may have announced earlier this year that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight Michael Bisping for the undisputed UFC middleweight title, the fight never received an official date. The UFC moved forward with the scrap, holding a press conference in Las Vegas where both St-Pierre and Bisping appeared on-stage to talk trash to one another while fielding questions from fans. Ultimately, St-Pierre revealed that he would be unable to fight over the summer, and would be willing to fight the champ closer to the end of the year. The champ then revealed that his knee injury was still not healed, and he too wouldn’t be able to fight until the end of the year.

With the highly anticipated return of former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre looming in the not-so-certain future, fight fans are anxiously awaiting word regarding when, or if, Georges St-Pierre will be returning to the Octagon. While St-Pierre was initially supposed to fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping for the middleweight belt this year upon returning to the Octagon, St-Pierre revealed several weeks ago that he would be unable to fight Bisping until the end of the year. While this didn’t match the timeline initially given by Bisping, the champ revealed that a knee injury would keep him sidelined through summer anyway.

Dana White confirms Georges St-Pierre will receive a welterweight title shot upon his return

Tom Taylor - May 22, 2017

Earlier this year, we learned that former UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre – one of the best fighters ever – was poised for a long-awaited return to the Octagon. St-Pierre’s return, however, would not occur in the welterweight division where he was once so dominant. Instead, the former welterweight king was set to make his return in the unfamiliar middleweight division, where he received a shot at reigning champion Michael Bisping. This news was understandably disappointing for the middleweight division’s top contenders, whose spot in line had been usurped by an admittedly great fighter, but one who had never fought in the division before. Fighters from Yoel Romero, to Luke Rockhold, to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza all expressed their distaste for this matchup.

Earlier this year, it was announced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be making his highly anticipated return to the Octagon in 2017 against UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. While the fight was never given an official date, Bisping finally demanded that St-Pierre be ready to fight over the summer after months without an official date. St-Pierre informed Bisping that he would be willing to fight any time after November, which prompted UFC President Dana White to subsequently announced that the promotion was not going to wait for the former welterweight champion, and that when St-Pierre made his return, it was expected to be at welterweight. Ultimately Bisping then revealed that he was still recovering from his knee surgery, and wouldn’t be ready to fight over the summer anyway.

Tom Taylor - May 17, 2017

For a time, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping was next expected to defend his title against former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Given that St-Pierre has not fought in many years, and that he’s never fought in the middleweight division before, this booking was met with widespread criticism. Luckily for those fans and fighters that disapproved of this fight, the plan has been nixed. Though Bisping hoped the fight would occur sometime this summer, St-Pierre recently came out and announced that he would’t be able to fight until November or later. This prompted UFC President Dana White to scrap this undeniably lucrative plan, and award the next middleweight title shot to the far more deserving Yoel Romero.

bjpenndotcom - May 12, 2017

Georges St-Pierre responds to Dana White cancelling fight

bjpenndotcom - May 12, 2017

Early in 2017, UFC President Dana White revealed that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown with middleweight champion Michael Bisping. While no date was given for the bout, the pair had a press conference in early 2017 to hype the fight. Ultimately, Bisping issued an ultimatum to St-Pierre, stating that if the former champ wasn’t ready to fight by July, he would take the former welterweight champ’s title fight, and give it to Yoel Romero. This month, St-Pierre released a video in which he told Bisping he was ready to fight any time after July.

Bisping vs. St-Pierre plans scrapped, Yoel Romero now gets next middleweight title shot

Tom Taylor - May 11, 2017

Several months ago, we learned that Georges St-Pierre and the UFC had squashed their differences, and that the former welterweight champion would be receive an immediate middleweight title shot against Michael Bisping upon his return. While this news was somewhat controversial, as St-Pierre’s shot deprived many of the middleweight division’s top contenders of their deserved shots, it was also met with widespread excitement. Unfortunately, the UFC could not seem to lock down a date for this Bisping vs. St-Pierre middleweight title fight. Though Bisping repeatedly said he hoped the fight would occur during International Fight Week in July, St-Pierre suggested he couldn’t fight until the fall, and ultimatately, until after October.

Georges St-Pierre suggests his return could occur at Madison Square Garden "in a few months"

Tom Taylor - May 3, 2017

At a to be determined date later this year, former UFC welterweight champion and veritable MMA legend Georges St-Pierre will return to the Octagon after several years of retirement. He will not, however, return to his former haunts in the welterweight division. Instead, he’ll be moving up to the middleweight division for an immediate – and controversial – title shot against reigning champion Michael Bisping. While we know that this fight is happening, Bisping, St-Pierre and the UFC have had a difficult time nailing down a date and location. Bisping has been very vocal in his desire to fight during International Fight Week, ideally at UFC 213 on July 8, but it’s looking more and more likely that this fight doesn’t occur until the fall.

Johny Hendricks wants to retire Georges St-Pierre "again"

bjpenndotcom - April 28, 2017

Back in 2013, UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre stepped into the Octagon against Johny Hendricks for a highly anticipated showdown that served as his ninth title defense. The fight was an extremely close one, which saw the judges award St-Pierre with a split decision win, marking his ninth successful title defense. The decision was undoubtably a controversial one, and St-Pierre ultimately ended up vacating the belt and taking an indefinite hiatus from the UFC in the days following the fight.
