Georges St-Pierre shoots down potential Johny Hendricks rematch

bjpenndotcom - March 9, 2017

The last time former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre was in the Octagon, ‘Rush’ was defending his welterweight title for the 9th time as he faced streaking contender Johny Hendricks. St-Pierre ultimately won the fight via split decision, retaining the belt and moving one step closer to the record of 10 title defenses set by middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva. With that being said, many believed Hendricks won the fight. This of course led to talks of a potential rematch, however with St-Pierre’s hiatus from the Octagon, a rematch was never a realistic possibility. Now, with St-Pierre set to return to the Octagon in 2017 at middleweight, and Hendricks currently coming off a win at 185 pounds, many have wondered if fight fans could see St-Pierre vs. Hendricks II four years later.

Russell Ess - March 8, 2017

It was all lined up for Yoel Romero to get his shot at UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in his next title defense. However, that all crumbled right before “The Soldier of God’s” eyes when Georges St-Pierre came to an agreement with the UFC to compete again and the former welterweight champion was announced as Bisping’s next opponent. Romero spoke to FloCombat with the help of a translator about the UFC booking Bisping vs. St-Pierre and the Olympic silver medalist said it is all just a matter of time for him.

Georges St-Pierre explains how draining being a UFC champion is

bjpenndotcom - March 8, 2017

Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre has not fought in over three years now. The last time ‘Rush’ stepped into the Octagon to fight, he was competing against Johny Hendricks in hopes of defending his welterweight title for the 9th time. St-Pierre and Hendricks went to war over the course of 5 rounds before St-Pierre was awarded the split decision win over Hendricks. Immediately after the fight, St-Pierre took an indefinite leave of absence. With speculation arising as to why the 170 pound kingpin was walking away from the sport as such a dominant time in his career, St-Pierre pointed to the UFC’s drug testing policies, expressing a dissatisfaction with the lack of thorough drug testing.

Coming off a majority decision win over Stephen Thompson at UFC 209, it looks like UFC welterweight division champion Tyron Woodley will likely be taking on the next welterweight contender rather than getting himself a superfight with some of the stars surrounding the welterweight division.

According to St-Pierre however, both he and the UFC are rather unhappy with the new deal that will see him return to the Octagon.

Though the date and location of the fight remain a mystery, we now know that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre‘s comeback fight will pit him against UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Shortly after this massive – and polarizing – fight was announced, the UFC sat St-Pierre and Bisping down beside each other at a press conference in Las Vegas. During this press conference, St-Pierre was his typical, civil self, while Bisping opted to turn up the trash talk in an attempt to get into his foe’s head.

Georges St-Pierre expects Demian Maia to become UFC welterweight champion

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

When former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre makes his long awaited comeback later this year, it will be to a middleweight title shot, not to a shot at the welterweight belt. That said, the former champ does still pay attention to the division he ruled for so long, and he’s particularly impressed by one welterweight contender in particular: streaking grappling whiz Demian Maia. The former champ showered Maia with praise on Monday’s edition of the MMA Hour. His words:

Friday afternoon, during their special press conference in Las Vegas, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre exchanged quite a few heated words. Bisping kicked off the press conference by showing up late, before making a grand entrance complete with several expletives, Conor McGregor style. After being told by a frustrated Dana White to take his seat, Georges St-Pierre took aim at the middleweight champ:

Throughout the course of 2017, news has continued to surface regarding the highly anticipated return of former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre. While it was announced earlier this year that GSP had signed a new multi-fight deal with the UFC, UFC President Dana White revealed this week that St-Pierre would be stepping into the Octagon against Michael Bisping in 2017 for Bisping’s middleweight title.

During negotiations regarding the return of Georges St-Pierre, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley was mentioned as a potential opponent for the former welterweight kingpin given the fact that Woodley holds the belt once held by Georges St-Pierre. With that being said, GSP has now signed a new multi-fight UFC contract, and will now fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping later in the year. Despite Tyron Woodley currently being booked for a welterweight showdown with Stephen Thompson this Saturday in the main event of UFC 209, he was asked about the GSP-Bisping fight during a recent interview on Fox Sports, in which he said:

Michael Bisping defends choice to fight Georges St-Pierre over Yoel Romero

Tom Taylor - March 2, 2017

Later this year, at a to-be-determined date, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping will defend his title. He will not, however, defend that title against Yoel Romero, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Luke Rockhold, Chris Weidman, Gegard Mousasi, Robert Whittaker, or any other member of the middleweight top-10. Instead, he’ll defend it against former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, who will be returning from a hiatus of several years. While the announcement of this fight generated excitement among some fans, it also generated plenty of backlash, as it deprives the middleweight division’s top contenders – namely Yoel Romero – of the title shots they’ve earned. Bisping, however, is not all that sympathetic. On a recent episode of UFC Tonight, the champ explained his choice to fight Georges St-Pierre over Yoel Romero. His words (via FoxSports).

Tom Taylor - March 2, 2017

Earlier this month, we learned that former welterweight champion and bona fide MMA legend Georges St-Pierre had ironed out his differences with the UFC and agreed to the terms of a new contract. Yesterday, we learned that the first fight of his anticipated comeback will pit him against middleweight champion Michael Bisping, at a to-be-determined date and location. This news, unsurprisingly, thrust the combat sports world into a frenzy, as some fans applauded the matchup, and others shook their heads at the way St-Pierre’s title shot sabotages the many more deserving middleweight contenders – contenders like Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Luke Rockhold, Robert Whittaker, Gegard Mousasi, and of course, streaking Cuban powerhouse Yoel Romero.

Earlier this month, we learned that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre had finally worked out his differences with the UFC and agreed to the terms of a new contract. This implied an imminent comeback for the Canadian MMA legend. The details of St-Pierre’s comeback fight, however, remained fairly nebulous. We did not know when, where or against whom he would be fighting. As of this morning, that is no longer the case. While the date and location of St-Pierre’s anticipated comeback fight is still a mystery, we do know who the welterweight great will fight in his return. He’ll be taking on Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title. This fight was announced by UFC President Dana White on ESPN.

Tyron Woodley thinks Georges St-Pierre is avoiding him

Tom Taylor - March 1, 2017

Georges St-Pierre is the greatest welterweight in MMA history, and after a long hiatus from the sport, he’s ready to return to the Octagon. In a somewhat surprising twist, however, we’ve learned that St-Pierre isn’t particularly interested in attempting to reclaim the welterweight title, which will be up for grabs when champ Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson fight in the main event of UFC 209 this weekend. In a recent interview with ESPN (via MMAFighting.com), Woodley weighed in on St-Pierre’s apparent disinterest in the welterweight crown. According to the current champ, this is because the former champ wants to steer clear of him.

Johny Hendricks weighs-in on Georges St-Pierre return

bjpenndotcom - February 28, 2017

Back in 2013, Johny Hendricks stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated fight with UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre. The pair scrapped in the main event of UFC 167, where St-Pierre picked up a controversial split decision to retain the welterweight championship. Following the fight, St-Pierre vacated the title and stepped away from the Octagon. Now, with a Georges St-Pierre return on the horizon following news that the former champ had signed a new multi-fight contract, and Hendricks currently fighting at middleweight, the former champ spoke on The MMA Hour to discuss the return of Georges St-Pierre, saying:
