Sergio Pettis Wants to Fight Henry Cejudo at UFC 218

By Justin Golightly - September 12, 2017

Last weekend was supposed to be the event that Demetrious Johnson broke Anderson Silva’s defense record, instead the spotlight was on another flyweight. After Henry Cejudo sandwiched his loss to the UFC flyweight champion by being on the wrong end of a razor-thin split decision to Joseph Benavidez, Cejudo knew he needed to make a statement at UFC 215. On Saturday, he walked out there and finished Wilson Reis in the second round. Just like that, his name was on dozens of polls asking who should get the next title shot. The other name? Sergio Pettis. A guy who wants Cejudo next to most likely determine just that.

“Congrats Henry Cejudo on the performance. I recall you saying you owe me for the last time
we were scheduled. Detroit in December? Let’s get it!” — Sergio Pettis on his official Instagram.

Demetrious Johnson originally wanted to fight Sergio Pettis at UFC 215, which then resulted in a back-and-forth between the UFC Powers That Be and a controversial dispute involving TJ Dillashaw. As of right now, Ray Borg is still the opponent that Johnson will defend against next, but Sergio Pettis is clearly a contender in Johnson’s eyes. As for Cejudo, Pettis was supposed to fight him back at UFC 211 but Henry hand to pull-out due to his hand injury.

A win over Henry Cejudo after his jaw-dropping UFC 215 performance could put Sergio Pettis up for a title shot next. On the other hand, if Cejudo can taker Pettis out, he’ll have made a convincing argument that he’s ready for a rematch with the seemingly-unbeatable Mighty Mouse. Either way, that sounds like an awesome fight and striking coach Brandon Gibson agrees.
