Hopkins: ‘Canelo Is The Next Blockbuster Superstar’

With Floyd Mayweather gone there certainly is a void left in his place. Mayweather, for better or worst, was basically the face of boxing. Yes, there are fighters like Manny Pacquiao, but you can’t argue with the numbers Mayweather brought in throughout his career and the the fact that he was someone who people just simply talked about. He was polarizing, in his bad and good moments.

So, who can take up that spot now that he’s retired? According to Bernard Hopkins, the man for the job is former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Canelo of course has his fight with Miguel Cotto scheduled for November 21st, but if he gets past him then perhaps Canelo will become boxing’s next super mega star. Here’s what Hopkins told FightHub.

“I don’t blame Floyd for fighting Berto. He got his minimum, his guaranteed [money from Showtime]. He fought everybody they wanted him to fight, and he had an opportunity to fight Berto and he did. Berto got a payday. Berto put in a good account of himself, but he didn’t surprise anybody in how he was going to fight. Floyd retired and there are so many people that are right there. Canelo is one of them to be the next blockbuster superstar in that position. I’m not saying he’s not that now. Now that it’s clear that he’s the only one after him [Mayweather], they’ll have to chase Canelo for that seat Floyd’s been holding for many, many years.”
