According to UFC color commentator Jimmy Smith, the solution to this recurring problem is probably tougher punishments for those who miss their marks. Smith offered up his proposed solution to MMA’s weight-cutting problem during an appearance on UFC Tonight.

“The idea that someone as big as Conor McGregor, with as much to lose and would take a fight against Frankie Edgar on short notice, is unlikely. I mean, you want to pimp him coming back for as many months as you possibly could and he knows that, the idea that, ‘oh I was willing to step in on short notice and not give the UFC and myself the time to maximize this opportunity’ is unlikely. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I’m sure it’s possible.”

If you’re a fan of Bellator, then you know exactly who Jimmy Smith is. Many have called him “Bellator’s Joe Rogan”, but they can’t call him that anymore! Bellator’s longtime color commentator, Smith recently parted ways with the organization that he was the voice of. He now finds himself with yep…you guessed it, the UFC. At UFC 221 in Perth, Australia this Saturday, Smith will make his UFC commentary debut and in the main event is a big middleweight matchup between Yoel Romero and the former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold. The winner takes with them the interim title which inevitably leads to a meeting with the undisputed champion, Robert Whittaker.

At the end of December, fans were shocked that Jimmy Smith and long-time employer Bellator parted ways. Although, the silver lining quickly showed itself on Monday when Smith said he’d know about his next job within the week. Sure enough, the news was released today as per an official UFC press release. Jimmy Smith just got picked up by the UFC to join the broadcast team and will be getting to work as soon as possible. “I am honored to join the world’s premier combat sports brand in 2018. Earlier this month, we learned that respected MMA commentator Jimmy Smith had left his long-time home of Bellator. From there, buzz immediately began to surface about his possible move to the UFC. UFC commentator Joe Rogan even sang Smith’s praises, encouraging the promotion to pick him up. “You f**ked up, Bellator,” Rogan said on his MMA Show. “You f**cked up. I’ve been telling everybody that Jimmy Smith’s the best out there and you let him go. That’s a huge error on their part. I would be thrilled if somehow or another they were able to work it out where Jimmy Smith was at the UFC. That would be what I would like to see.”

Given that Smith is a bottomless pit of MMA knowledge with charisma to boot, this news came as a definite surprise. Apparently, however, the broadcaster’s departure from Bellator was quite amicable.
