EXCLUSIVE | Phil Daru discusses physical changes for Joanna Jedrzejczyk's move to flyweight
Mike Pendleton - December 6, 2018
Once the UFC opened up the women’s flyweight division many thought it’d be a great opportunity for some of the women in the strawweight and bantamweight divisions to perform at their peak. Such was the case for former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and former bantamweight title challenger, Valentina Shevchenko. Fittingly enough, Jedrzejczyk and Shevchenko are meeting at UFC 231 for the vacant flyweight title in a rivalry that has already experienced three Muay Thai fights for the two women. Shevchenko has three wins over Jedrzejczyk in Muay Thai but both women have put those fights behind them leading up to their title fight. Jedrzejczyk has said she believes a win over Shevchenko, which would make her a champion in a second weight class, would give her legendary status for her career.

When UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a second time this past April, it seemingly closed the door on their rivalry….for now. According to “Thug Rose” that’s more satisfying than winning a UFC championship as she mentioned in recent interview with UFC.com.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk issues lengthy statement on cancelled fight with Shevchenko: 'I feel truly resentful'
Tom Taylor - October 3, 2018
Former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk was expected to fight Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title at UFC 231 this December 8 in Toronto. Unfortunately for her, this matchup was nixed not longer after it was announced, as Shevchenko was plucked from UFC 231 and redistributed to a UFC 230 main event title fight with Sijara Eubanks. It should come as no surprise that Joanna Jedrzejczyk is quite disappointed with this turn of events. Yet having learned of her title fight’s cancellation through the media rather than through UFC officials, she’s even more disappointed than she would have been otherwise.

At UFC 231 in Toronto on December 8, the women’s flyweight title will be on the line. However, there will be no champion defending it, as former champion Nicco Montano was stripped of the title after failing to reach the scale at UFC 228. Come December, the current number one flyweight contender Valentina Shevchenko will take on the former strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk. It is an interesting matchup, as, before Rose Namajunas, Jedrzejczyk was unbeatable at 115-pounds but did struggle with her weight cuts. While Shevchenko arguably won the bantamweight title in a fight against Amanda Nunes that ended up being a split-decision win for Nunes.

Inaugural UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was supposed to defend her title against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 earlier this month. Regrettably, she was hospitalized while undertaking her weight cut down to 125 pounds, and forced out of the fight. From there, the UFC made the controversial decision to strip Nicco Montano of her title, which she had not yet defended. Valentina Shevchenko is now expected to fight for the vacant title in the near future — possibly against former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk: 'I’m very open to move up and face Valentina Shevchenko'
Cole Shelton - September 14, 2018
Joanna Jedrzejczyk was once unbeatable in MMA as she went 14-0. During that stretch, she won and defended the strawweight title five times. Ultimately, Jedrzejczyk met her match as she lost back-to-back fights against Rose Namajunas. With Jedrzejczyk 0-2 against the current champion, another title shot at strawweight is unlikely, so a move up to flyweight makes sense.

It has quickly become quite the ‘Big drama show!’ when it comes to the women’s 125-pound weight class in the UFC. And now we’re left wondering what’s next. On weigh-in day for UFC 228 this past weekend, mid-weight cut the then champion Nicco Montano would be hospitalized due to issues with her kidneys resulting in a cancelation of her scheduled title defense against Valentina Shevchenko.

Namajunas, of course, has stated she won’t give Jedrzejczyk a rematch unless the former champion admits she is the better fighter.

Then, in November of 2017, her reign came to a shocking and violent end, as she was put down by a salvo of first-round Rose Namajunas punches. Given her previous dominance, Jedrzejczyk was given the chance to reclaim her title from Namajunas in an immediate rematch in April. In the end, however, she fell to 0-2 against the new champion, giving up a close but fair unanimous decision.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk says Dana White was "a little bit disgusted" by scoring of Namajunas rematch
Tom Taylor - April 17, 2018
In November of 2017, long-time UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk succumbed to a first-round knockout dealt by unheralded challenger Rose Namajunas, surrendering her title as a result. Earlier this month, in the co-main event of UFC 223, Jedrzejczyk failed to reclaim that title, giving up a close decision to Namajunas in the pair’s anticipated rematch. While the judges awarded the decision to Namajunas in this rematch, however, Jedrzejczyk has repeatedly stated that she feels the fight should have been scored in her favor. Her main argument to this end is that she technically landed more strikes than her foe.
