In a perfect world, Daniel Cormier would fight Jon Jones “over and over again”

In January of 2015, an undefeated Daniel Cormier challenged his hated rival Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title. Though he put up an admirable fight against the seemingly unbeatable Jones, he would ultimately lose this fight by unanimous decision.

In the two years since, Cormier and Jones have experienced very different trajectories. Jones was stripped of the light heavyweight title for a laundry list of legal troubles, and later suspended for a brush with the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Cormier, meanwhile, usurped the light heavyweight throne in Jones’ stead, winning it in a fight with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, and defending it in an unforgettable war with Alexander Gustafsson.

While Cormier now has his sights set on a rematch with Rumble, and Jones is still serving a USADA suspension, their destinies seem to be tied, and a second fight between them seems inevitable. In a recent appearance on the Luke Thomas show, Cormier touched on this this fact, saying that in a perfect world, he’d just fight his rival over and over again.

“I’d like to fight [Jon Jones],” he said. “I’d like to fight him all the time. I’ve always said that. If it was up to me I’d just keep fighting him over and over again.”

Cormier then touched on Jones immediate future, saying it may be unwise for the former champ to jump back into the fire with an immediate title shot.

“It’s very difficult to say that he doesn’t get a title shot because of who he is,” Cormier said. “For him competitively, he probably should fight somebody first because it’s been so long in between fights but I just don’t know if he’ll be granted that opportunity. I fight in April, July is when he comes back. If he wants to fight right back in July, that would be a pretty quick turn around for me… So he would essentially have to end up waiting for me which would put him more time on the shelf, or he would try to fight before.”
