Yesterday afternoon, news surfaced that former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had lost his mother, who had been struggling with diabetes for some time.

In the wake of this tragedy, the MMA community united around Jones, offering their condolences to the former champ, and his brothers Arthur and Chandler, both of whom play in the NFL. Even reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who stands out as Jones’ most heated rival, took a moment to reach out to the former champion and offer his thoughts and prayers.

Cormier extended his condolences to his rival on Twitter.

“In our community, the mother is the backbone,” Cormier said. “[Jon Jones],” Arthur, Chandler and Mr. Jones, I am sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Mrs. Camille. Prayers.”

Though it’s unfortunate that it is the result of such an unfortunate tragedy, this compassionate moment marks a rare armistice in one of the most high-profile beefs in MMA.

Cormier and Jones are currently scheduled for an anticipated light heavyweight title showdown in the main event of UFC 214 this July 29. This bout will be a rematch of an early 2015 bout, which Jones won with a hard fought decision.

UFC 214 is also expected to include the first UFC title shot of featherweight star Cris “Cyborg” Justino, though her opponent for this fight is not yet official. The card will also feature a featherweight fight between Ricardo Lamas and Jason Knight, who replaces the injured Korean Zombie. The card was initially expected to include a fight between Doo Ho Choi and Andre Fili. Regrettably Choi has also sustained an injury.

What do you think of Daniel Cormier’s choice to lower his weapons and offer his condolences to Jon Jones?
