In April of 2016, Jones returned from a similar layoff. Though he was originally expected to challenge Cormier for gold in this 2016 return to action, a last-minute Cormier injury meant he instead battled late-replacement Ovince St. Preux for interim gold.

For five, frenzied rounds, the American champion and Swedish challenger pelted each other with heavy artillery, forcing momentum swing after momentum swing after momentum swing. After their five round war, which Jones won by decision, the pair ended up posing for a classic photo together. It was clear that they earned each other’s respect.

While the press conference was certainly a heated affair for the two men, footage emerged of the pair backstage before the press conference getting into a war of words which resulted in Cormier throwing his water bottle at Jones before security held the champ back. During the press conference, Cormier appeared extremely comfortable on the mic, never shying away from a verbal showdown with his nemesis. With that being said however, many wondered if Cormier crossed the line when he called Jones a “junkie” during the press conference.

Confirmed: Jon Jones will rematch Daniel Cormier at UFC 214
Tom Taylor - May 10, 2017
Not long ago, UFC President Dana White suggested that he would never trust former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones to headline a pay-per-view again, citing the former champ’s many troubles outside the cage as the reason. It appears that this was an empty promise. BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor has confirmed with sources close to the fight that Jones will make his anticipated return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 214, where he will will challenge reigning champion Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title. The bout was first reported to be in the works by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani. The card goes down on July 29 in Anaheim, California.
Jon Jones manager reacts to main event snub
bjpenndotcom - May 10, 2017
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been hindered by his troubles outside of the Octagon over the past few years. Most recently, Jones was pulled from UFC 200 just 48 hours before he was scheduled to step into the Octagon with Daniel Cormier in hopes of reclaiming the light heavyweight championship he never lost in the Octagon. While an appeal process saw Jones handed a year long suspension retroactive to July, the damage had already been done. UFC President Dana White infamously explained after Jones UFC 200 withdrawal that the former light heavyweight champ would never headline an event again.
Jon Jones roasts rival Daniel Cormier: "Let's not forget me popping your cherry"
Tom Taylor - May 1, 2017
With former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ suspension wrapping up in July, it’s looking like we can expect him to return to the cage sometime this summer. And though there was some talk of his taking a tune-up fight in his first fight back, it now looks as though he’ll jump right back into the fire with an immediate title shot against reigning champ and long-time rival Daniel Cormier. Jones and Cormier’s rivalry is one of the most visible in MMA, and it dates back to the buildup to their first encounter, which occurred in January of 2015. Jones won this first fight by decision.
Daniel Cormier demands Jon Jones accepts July rematch
bjpenndotcom - April 27, 2017
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is looking to secure himself a fight with former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones when ‘Bones’ becomes eligible to fight again in July following his year-long USADA suspension stemming from his random out-of-competition failed drug test prior to UFC 200, where he was supposed to fight Cormier for the undisputed light heavyweight title. Following Cormier’s recent UFC 210 win over Anthony Johnson, which saw him defend the light heavyweight title for the second time, the light heavyweight champ used his post-fight Octagon interview to send a message to Jon Jones.
Alexander Gustafsson: Jon Jones is still the best UFC light heavyweight right now
Russell Ess - April 18, 2017
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier surely wants his chance to get another shot at Jon Jones in the Octagon, especially when many believe Jones is still the best fighter in the division. #1 ranked UFC light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson is one of those that have voiced that Jones is still the most superior fighter in their division. Speaking with Champions, “The Mauler” has his priorities on beating Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 109 on May 28 but is definitely aware of what’s going on in the division.
If Jon Jones takes a tune-up fight, he only has one legitimate option for an opponent
Tom Taylor - April 18, 2017
Last night, UFC President Dana White announced on ESPN that, if former UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones is ready in time for UFC 214, which is scheduled for July 29, he will fight reigning champion Daniel Cormier for the title on the card. Shortly thereafter, White elaborated that, if Jones feels he won’t be ready for a title fight on July 29 – because he’s been sidelined for so long – Cormier will then make his next title defense against streaking British striker Jimi Manuwa. Given Jones’ heated rivalry with Cormier, it’s very hard to imagine him openly admitting that he feels too rusty for an immediate title shot, and that he’d like a tune-up fight instead. Indeed, all signs point to his accepting this title shot against Cormier.

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones trade barbs over steroid accusations
Tom Taylor - April 16, 2017
On Saturday, the UFC took over Kansas City, Missouri with UFC on Fox 24. It was an unforgettable card, as we saw flyweight champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson score a historic 10th title defense with an armbar of Wilson Reis, Rose Namajunas pick up an emphatic submission defeat of Michelle Waterson, and Robert Whittaker burst into title contention with a second-round stoppage of Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. While this card dominated fan attention on Saturday, however, it did not serve as enough of a distraction to keep light heavyweight rivals Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones from ripping at each other on social media. While Cormier, who is the current UFC light heavyweight champion, was undoubtedly busy with his UFC on Fox broadcast duties, he found time in his day to hit the former champ Jones with a fiery accusation on Twitter, accusing him outright of using steroids and cheating. This remark from Cormier followed a Tweet from Jones which asked if Cormier really believes he would ever do steroids.

Jon Jones once again rips Daniel Cormier over 'TowelGate' incident
Tom Taylor - April 13, 2017
Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 210, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier scored an impressive, second-round submission win over the ever-dangerous Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Regrettably, Cormier’s win was not without controversy. On the Friday morning before his battle with Rumble, Cormier stepped onto the scale and weighed in a 206.2 pounds, 1.2 pounds over the required weight for a light heavyweight title fight. Initially, it looked as though disaster had struck. Cormier was over weight, and it appeared the title fight would be off. But then, in an unprecedented twist, he was allowed to weigh in again just minutes later, and this time, he met the required weight of 205 pounds. That’s where the controversy emerged.
