Report | Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson 2 negotiations stalled due to Jones holding out for PPV points

The return of Jon Jones is inevitable at this point. After getting his suspension settled at 15-months, he’s eligible to fight anytime after October 28.

Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson, UFC 232

Prior to the news of what the former light heavyweight champion’s suspension would be, many speculated that he would end up being the headliner for the big UFC 230 card that takes place in Madison Square Garden on November 3. Who it would be against was presumed to likely be his old adversary, Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson.

It now appears that if the two do get their rematch it won’t come at UFC 230 but more likely UFC 232 or later.

However, it has now been reported by FanSided’s Amy Kaplan that negotiations for the fight have been stalled due to Jones wanting pay-per-view points. Something that is generally reserved only for champions.

Multiple sources have told me that the Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson negotiations have stalled due to Jones not getting PPV buys. I’m told he’s holding out for a cut of the buys.

Jones’ last fight came at UFC 214 in July 2017 when he challenged for Daniel Cormier’s light heavyweight title. It would initially be a win for Jones but after another fiasco with Jones and USADA, he was stripped of the title and the win was overturned to a no contest.

For Gustafsson, he last fought in May 2017 against Glover Teixeira whom he defeated by fifth-round knockout. Gustafsson was supposed to face recent 205-pound title challenger Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 227 in August but Oezdemir was forced out due to injury.

As for the first Jones and Gustafsson battle, it took place just days over five years ago on September 21, 2013, at UFC 165. To this day it still remains one of the greatest title fights in UFC history.
