Jorge Masvidal responds to Leon Edwards’ call-out

Shortly after his impressive decision defeat of Donald Cerrone — inarguably the best win of his career thus far — British welterweight contender Leon Edwards called for a fight with Jorge Masvidal. His hope, he said, is that the fight would occur in his native Birmingham.

“At the time, he was No. 6 in the rankings and I was going down in the rankings and everyone else was matched up, so why not take out another old gun?” Edwards said, explaining why he called out Masvidal. “Masvidal, he’s been around again, a long time, so why not go in there and take him out?

“To bring the UFC back to Birmingham as well, headline billing me and him, have Tom Breese and my brother Fabian on the bill. It would be amazing.”

Masvidal has now responded, stating that, if Edwards is the best option available, he’s down.

“People are always calling me out,” Masvidal told MMAjunkie. “I don’t give two shits who calls me out. I just want a big fight.

“If Leon is the biggest fight that I can get my hands on, meaning the biggest name and biggest ranking, then that’s who it is.”

With his decision win over Donald Cerrone, which topped Saturday morning’s UFC Singapore card, Leon Edwards moved onto a six-fight streak, including wins over Peter Sobotta, Bryan Barberena, Vincente Luque and Albert Tumenov. He’s currently 16-3 overall.

Jorge Masvidal, meanwhile, is currently looking for the opportunity to rebound from back-to-back decision losses to recent title challengers Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Demian Maia. He’s 32-13 in sum.
