Masvidal discussed the possibility of a fight with Nurmagomedov during a Q&A on Instagram Live this week. He praised the lightweight champion, and conceded that he’d be willing to fight him in the 155-pound lightweight division, so long as the UFC makes the move worth his while.

Masvidal is currently locked in a contract stalemate with the UFC. Instead of taking the UFC’s offer to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, which he believes is below fair market value, Masvidal decided to hold out instead. The UFC then called upon Gilbert Burns to take on Usman in the main event of UFC 251, while Masvidal sits on the sidelines instead.

UFC welterweight superstar Jorge Masvidal admits that he feels bad for UFC president Dana White after failing to come to terms on a deal for UFC 251. Masvidal was supposed to fight UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman but he was unable to come to an agreement with the UFC on the financials of the deal. The UFC wanted Masvidal to fight on his old contract while Masvidal was hoping to spur a PPV headliner against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 into the a new deal. The UFC refused to give Masvidal more money and he decided to hold out instead, which led to Gilbert Burns stepping in. Burns now faces Usman at UFC 251 on July 11 in the main event.

Dana White says Jorge Masvidal is very similar to the Diaz brothers in terms of negotiating fights. For years, the UFC has had a hard time getting both Nick and Nate Diaz into the Octagon. The two have wanted more money and at one point, White said he was having someone else in the UFC deal with the Diaz brothers as he couldn’t bare the frustration anymore. The two have gone years in between fights and now the UFC boss says it is getting very similar with Jorge Masvidal.

The promotion is hoping to book him against UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, but Masvidal is looking to get a raise on his current contract to take the fight. UFC president Dana White doesn’t want to renegotiate the detail, leading to talks for the Usman fight being stalled. The promotion is now looking at Gilbert Burns to step in and fight Usman instead.

He is just the latest fighter to complain about fighter pay. Jon Jones went on a Twitter rant about that. Henry Cejudo, meanwhile, retired but said if the promotion paid him more, he would return.

Jorge Masvidal has not competed inside of the Octagon since defeating Nate Diaz for the BMF Title at UFC 244 in November of 2019. Despite his incredible run last year, which included stoppage wins over Darren Till, Ben Askren and the aforementioned ‘Stockton Slugger’, Masvidal has not been booked to fight in 2020.
