Jorge Masvidal reacts to Ben Askren's retirement

Tom Taylor - November 28, 2019

Earlier this month, former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren announced his retirement from MMA. This week, Jorge Masvidal — easily Askren’s most high-profile rival in the UFC —gave his take on that retirement. Despite the war of words that raged between Askren and Masvidal, and the violent way with which their fight ended, Masvidal surprisingly tipped his hat to Askren and shared his belief that the wrestler shouldn’t have retired so soon.

Jorge Masvidal sends message to rivals after Canelo snub

Tom Taylor - November 27, 2019

Jorge Masvidal recently expressed interest in a fight with boxing star Canelo Alvarez. Unfortunately for the red-hot UFC welterweight, Alvarez doesn’t seem very interested in this cross-over matchup — though he admits it would be a good business opportunity. “I say this with all respect: If I go into his sport, I have nothing to do there. And I think the same about boxing: If (MMA fighters) come into boxing, they have nothing to do here,” Canelo told Little Giant Boxing of a fight with Masvidal (via MMA Junkie). “But looking at it from a business standpoint, it is attractive, but it’s not a challenge for me, so it’s not my priority.

Tom Taylor - November 27, 2019

Pound-for-pound boxing star Canelo Alvarez admits a potential fight with surging UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal is alluring from a business standpoint, but not from a competitive standpoint. Cole Shelton - November 19, 2019

Yet Dan Lambert, the owner of American Top Team, is hoping for something else for “Gamebred” next. Lambert and the team at ATT know Masvidal wants the biggest payday so they are hoping a Conor McGregor fight can come to fruition. If that fight doesn’t materialize, Lambert believes Nick Diaz makes the most sense for Masvidal.

Harry Kettle - November 19, 2019

Nick Diaz’s former coach Cesar Gracie believes that the former Strikeforce star would “crush” guys like Jorge Masvidal when he’s at his best. Diaz hasn’t fought inside the Octagon since back in January 2015, almost five years ago, in his main event showdown with Anderson Silva which was overturned to a no contest. Ever since then he’s largely stayed away from the MMA bubble, with his younger brother Nate taking advantage of that by becoming one of the biggest stars in the sport.

Diaz hinted at wanting a showdown with Masvidal inside AT&T Stadium after “Gamebred” defeated Nate via TKO at UFC 244. The Stockton native’s team later told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that they want the fight for spring 2020.

While he also claimed he has no interest in fighting again, he added that he took issue with some of Masvidal’s recent comments to his brother Nate, and hinted that he’d be willing to fight Masvidal inside AT&T Stadium for the right price. “All I see is f*cking dollar signs right now,” Diaz said of Masvidal (via MMA News). “It’s not on me. You wanna talk about baptizing my younger brother, that’s on you. I never had nothing disrespectful to say, but you don’t talk about baptizing my younger brother. So you’re already in a f*cked up position if you fight with me. You don’t f*cking talk about baptizing someone’s younger brother. That’s my baby brother, you don’t talk like that to nobody. So who rides on who’s side?

Nick Diaz claims he has no interest in fighting again. He made that feeling quite clear during a recent interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. That being said, he does seem to have a bone to pick with Jorge Masvidal, who recently defeated his younger brother Nate, and implied that he’d be willing to battle the Cuban-American at AT&T Stadium if the price is right. In particular, the elder Diaz bro took issue with Masvidal claiming he would “baptize” Nate.
