Leon Edwards expected to replace Nate Diaz against Jorge Masvidal

It appears the UFC has had a backup plan in case either of Nate Diaz or Jorge Masvidal had to pull out of their UFC 244 main event. And, that backup plan is Leon Edwards. According to Chisanga Malata of Daily Star Sport, the UFC have been paying Edwards to be in a training camp and on standby for this fight.

Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz were supposed to square off for the promotions new BMF Title in the main event of UFC 244 next month in New York. However, earlier this afternoon ‘The Stockton Slugger’ took to Twitter where he announced that he had been flagged by USADA and thus would not be competing on the November 2 fight card at Madison Square Garden.

UFC welterweight contender Nate Diaz has released his own promo in anticipation of UFC 244’s blockbuster main event. Stockton’s favourite son will fight Jorge Masvidal at Madison Square Garden with the BMF Championship on the line. Both men are coming off of fantastic victories, with Diaz defeating Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 and Masvidal knocking out Ben Askren at UFC 239.

UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington has confirmed that he will not be leaving American Top Team following recent disputes with his teammates. Covington (15-1) has won his last seven fights and will challenge Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 245 in December. Prior to that, however, one issue that needed to be resolved was the ongoing problems between himself and several members of ATT.

Ben Askren only got five seconds in the cage with Jorge Masvidal, falling to a flying knee in that span. Unsurprisingly, he’s keen to get a little more cage-time in with his rival. “What I said explicitly was I wanted to come back [from retirement] to see if I was the best in the world,” Askren told MMA Fighting recently. “In that five seconds, we didn’t find that out. Baines has already painted a small-scale version of the image that will ultimately end up on the wall of American Top Team.

In his most recent and infamous callout, Nate Diaz called for a fight against Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal and referred to him as one of the very few “gangsters” left in the UFC, and while crediting his future opponent, Diaz also pointed out that Masvidal was not a “West Coast Gangster”. Since the callout, no one has asked Jorge Masvidal about the “West Coast Gangster” comment even when both fighters were across from each other, but during the most recent UFC event in Mexico City, Masvidal finally responded.
