Edwards said an interview this week that the UFC offered him a fight against Masvidal and that he accepted it, yet Edwards claims Masvidal turned the fight down. UFC president Dana White said earlier this week that Colby Covington would get the next title shot against Kamaru Usman, and said the promotion would offer Masvidal another opponent, which most assumed to be Edwards.

Yet, Covington believes that actually makes sense for him to fight Usman and Masvidal to fight McGregor.

In fact, he says the only fights he’s willing to accept at this juncture are a fight with McGregor or a welterweight title shot. Unfortunately for Masvidal, UFC President Dana White is not a fan of this matchup. The UFC boss also doesn’t think Masvidal is in a position to make ultimatums. He’ll reportedly be offered a fight imminently — but not with McGregor.

Unfortunately for Masvidal, it sounds as though his good friend and training partner Colby Covington will get the next crack at the reigning champ Kamaru Usman. According to MMA analyst Chael Sonnen, however, there could be something big on the agenda for Jorge Masvidal — even if it’s not a title shot. Sonnen is adamant that a matchup between Masvidal and Conor McGregor is still a possibility, contrary to UFC President Dana White’s apparent disinterest in it.

Thompson gave his take on the welterweight title situation in a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “Leon Edwards is on an 8 fight winning streak, wow,” he said. “So he could possibly be fighting for the title. I know everyone’s talking Masvidal, but he’s had two wins and his third loss was me at MSG. I think there are other people more deserving of the title, but he’s put on some good shows and knocked out some good people so you never know.”

Jorge Masvidal has been campaigning for a fight with Conor McGregor for several weeks, but from the sounds of it, his callouts of the Irishman are not rooted in bad blood. In fact, Masvidal seems to have quite a bit of respect for the former two-division champion. “First, let me say whether Conor takes it or not — because people be putting sometimes words in people’s mouths, from my mouth in particular — I got good things to say about Conor,” Masvidal told TMZ Sports (transcript via MMA Fighting). “He’s done a lot in this sport and he’s made his money already. If he feels he’s not getting the money he deserves to come back, man I’m the first one to applaud him and be like, ‘Do your thing my brother. Go get the money.’ I always cheer for my MMA brothers and sisters. So if he feels he ain’t getting his money’s worth, I’m not gonna call ever him a p*ssy for that, or nothing like that. Go get your money’s worth. That’s the first thing I want to say.

Shortly after Jorge Masvidal defeated Ben Askren with a five-second flying knee knockout at UFC 239, he called for a superfight with Conor McGregor. UFC President Dana White, however, promptly shut this idea down, claiming Masvidal is simply too big for a fight with McGregor.
