Jose Aldo reacts to Conor McGregor fighting Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205
While UFC President Dana White was adamant about UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor defending his featherweight title after his UFC 202 scrap with Nate Diaz, it was revealed earlier this week that McGregor’s next fight would be a lightweight tilt for Eddie Alvarez’ lightweight championship in the main event of UFC 205.
In addition to his next fight being a lightweight scrap, it was revealed that McGregor would not be stripped of his featherweight championship as Dana White previously stated. Rather, the fight gives McGregor the opportunity to become not only the 3rd 2-division UFC champion in UFC history, but also the first simultaneous 2-division UFC champion.
Following the announcement, interim UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo took to Twitter to react to the news of McGregor vs. Alvarez with a Tweet that has since been deleted.
Fortunately, we have a screenshot of the Tweet! Check it out below:
McGregor and Aldo were first slated to fight at UFC 189 in July of 2015 for the featherweight title, however Aldo backed out of the fight just days before due to what was called a rib injury. Aldo was replaced by Chad Mendes, who McGregor TKOd to win the interim featherweight championship.
When McGregor and Aldo stepped into the octagon to square off at UFC 194 in December of 2015, McGregor picked up a spectacular 13 second knockout win to defeat Aldo, and claim the UFC featherweight championship.
While Aldo has been campaigning for an immediate rematch since losing the belt nearly a year ago, McGregor’s first fight after defeating Aldo was slated to be a lightweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196. Unfortunately, dos Anjos backed out of that fight just two weeks before the event and was replaced by Nate Diaz.
As the MMA community knows by now, McGregor was defeated by Diaz at UFC 196, but went on to avenge the loss by defeating Diaz via majority decision at UFC 202 last month.
Now, with McGregor set to fight Alvarez, and Jose Aldo left opponent-less, who would you like to see Aldo defend his interim featherweight championship against?
