Jose Aldo says he is chasing down Conor McGregor for rematch and interim belts are ‘bullshit’
Newly promoted UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is hungry for a rematch against his rival Conor McGregor.
After being defeated for the first time in ten years in a shocking 13-second knockout coming from the hands of McGregor at UFC 194, Aldo is looking to follow the Irishman up to the UFC lightweight division if that is what it is going to take to challenge him again.
“I want to get a fight with Conor, but as he is running from the fight, I want to see how things are going to be in the division,” Aldo said to Ag of Flocombat. “But we will fight at lightweight. I don’t want to fight him at featherweight. I’m the champion, and I’ve been beating everyone. I want to fight in another division, too, since this is possible now. It is not possible just for one guy. I will ask for a fight and I will also deny fights if I want to. Since [Dana White] said that he doesn’t force anybody to fight… This is me right now.”
After making it known that he wanted to be released from the UFC after Conor Mcgregor was booked to fight Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the lightweight title while still maintaining the featherweight belt, Aldo met privately with UFC President Dana White and the two smoothed things out. Aldo said that he will be asking for things from the UFC that “will be worthy” as Aldo was previously denied the same chance to fight for the lightweight title while he maintained the featherweight title during his first run as the king of the UFC 145-pound division.
As for his next fight, Aldo says that he has options even if it isn’t against the newly crowned UFC interim featherweight champion Max Holloway.
“This interim belt is bullshit,” Aldo said. “Even when I won it [in July at UFC 200] I said that. It is just a fu–ing excuse that someone created to save events. That is what this belt means. I’m the champion, and I will be waiting to defend my title. If is not going to be against [Holloway], I could do a super fight or fight in another division.”
