Jose Aldo says he is rethinking retirement

By Chris Taylor - October 21, 2016

Current UFC interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo met with UFC president Dana White earlier this week to discuss his fighting future.

The long time pound-for-pound great had recently requested his release from the promotion, this while stating that his desire was to retire from the sport of mixed martial arts.

Aldo’s unhappiness seemed to stem from the fact that current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was given a lightweight title shot against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York, this while being allowed to keep his current 145-pound strap.

A couple of years ago, Jose Aldo was considering moving up to lightweight to challenge then 155-pound champion Anthony Pettis, however, the long time Brazilian champion was told by UFC officials that he would have to vacate his 145-pound title in order to do so.

A super-fight between Aldo and Pettis never came to fruition.

With all that said, Jose Aldo appears to be changing his tune on retirement, as he tweeted the following message on Twitter:

“Rethinking retirement of MMA, I spoke with my family and seeing the requests from my Fans saw good things for you. Thanks Russia.” (as translated by bing)

Aldo most recently competed at July’s UFC 200 event where for the second time in his career he defeated Frankie Edgar via decision, this time capturing the UFC’s interim featherweight title in the process.

The Brazilian champion had stated in the past that he was still interested in what would now be a featherweight title fight with Anthony “Showtime” Pettis.

Also waiting for Aldo is streaking 145-pound contender Max Holloway. The Hawaiian standout has won nine-straight fights and has had his eyes on the current interim featherweight title holder for some time.
