This month has been a busy one for the UFC’s featherweight division. After Irish superstar Conor McGregor, who reigned as the featherweight champion at the time, successfully made his lightweight debut in November when he TKOd Eddie Alvarez to capture the lightweight championship, he then opted to relinquish the featherweight championship. As a result, the UFC chose to promote interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo to the undisputed featherweight champion, and make this past Saturday’s UFC 206 main event scrap between Max Holloway & Anthony Pettis an interim featherweight championship fight. While the fight was initially slated to be the co-main event, after UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier withdrew from his scheduled headlining fight with Anthony Johnson due to a groin injury, the co-main event scrap between Holloway & Pettis was promoted to the main event.

Last night, in the main event of UFC 206, Hawaiian contender Max Holloway won the UFC interim featherweight title with a third-round TKO of former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis. This win set the Hawaiian up for a title-unifying showdown with undisputed champ Jose Aldo, who was recently promoted to that role when Conor McGregor was stripped of the title. In the moments after his defeat of Pettis, Holloway issued a callout of Aldo, challenging the featherweight great to a showdown at UFC 208 this February in Brooklyn. He then encouraged fans to use the hashtag #WheresJoseWaldo on social media, referencing Aldo’s regrettable tendency to pull out of fights.

Recently crowned undisputed UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has been criticized quite a bit since he was promoted from the interim featherweight champion to the undisputed featherweight champion in the wake of Conor McGregor relinquishing the featherweight title. Aldo reigned as the UFC featherweight champion for five years, defending his title seven times over the course of his reign, which included a nearly 10 year unbeaten streak that extended back to his reign as the WEC champion. That all changed at UFC 194 however when Aldo stepped into the Octagon with Irish superstar Conor McGregor. In just 13 seconds, McGregor landed a brutal left-hand shot that starched Aldo, bringing an end to his five-year reign as champion.

It was stated numerous times by UFC President Dana White that Conor McGregor would have to vacate a title if he won the UFC lightweight belt against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. “If he wins, he’ll hold two belts,” White said prior to UFC 205 taking place. “Then he’ll decide which one he wants to give back to me. He can’t hold both. He’ll have accomplished this. Then he’ll have to figure out which one he wants to give up. He can’t hold up two divisions.”

Last December, Ireland’s Conor McGregor won the UFC featherweight title with a 13 second knockout of Jose Aldo. In his next fight, he was expected to take on then lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos for a shot at a second UFC belt. When Dos Anjos withdrew from this planned contest with an injury, however, McGregor would take on Nate Diaz on just 11 days’ notice – a fight he would famously lose. From there, McGregor would rematch Diaz, this time walking away with a hard-fought majority decision win. His next and most recent bout would see him get the lightweight title shot he was originally supposed to get against Dos Anjos – though the champion by this point was Eddie Alvarez. McGregor would dominate Alvarez to a second-round TKO, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously as he did. If math isn’t your strong suit, that’s three fights McGregor has taken since he won the UFC featherweight title almost a year ago – and not one of them was a defense of that title. Though he is an undeniably talented fighter, he’s hardly the picture of an active champion.

As if the stakes weren’t high enough, the fight was also a rematch between the pair, who first met at UFC 156 in 2013, where Aldo secured a unanimous decision win to retain the featherweight title.
