Kelvin Gastelum eyes title shot following split-decision victory over Ronaldo Souza

By Chris Taylor - May 13, 2018

Kelvin Gastelum (15-3 MMA, 1 no-contest) added another huge name to his resume at last night’s UFC 224 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil scoring a hard fought split-decision victory over perennial middleweight contender Ronadlo “Jacare” Souza.

The win marked Kelvin’s second in a row, as he had previously starched Michael Bisping this past November in Shanghai, China.

Despite not being able to finish “Jacare” at last night’s UFC 224 event, Kelvin Gastelum, who has now won four of his past five fights, believes that he should be the next man in line for a middleweight title shot.

“I definitely feel like a title shot should be next,” Gastelum told MMAJunkie after his bout with Souza. “I don’t think I’d accept any other fight than the title shot. I’m the most active middleweight there has been. All the guys that I fought are top 10 and former champions. So I feel like I’m deserving.”

Since moving up to the UFC’s middleweight division in December of 2016, Gastelum has scored wins over Tim Kenndy (TKO), Vitor Belfort (TKO), Michael Bisping (KO) and of course most recently Ronaldo Souza.

Gastelum’s lone loss in that time came via submission to former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, who tapped Kelvin out with an arm-triangle choke at UFC Uniondale in July of 2017.

The UFC middleweight title will be on the line next month in Chicago when current champion Robert Whittaker rematches Yoel Romero in the main event of UFC 225 on June 9.
