It looks like Kevin Lee may not fight Islam Makhachev after all. A day after saying he would fight the Russian prospect, Lee has some new names on his mind. Fresh off his vicious head kick win over Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244, Lee told reporters following the event that he wanted Makhachev next. But in a new interview with TMZ on Monday, Lee proposed some other fights instead. Now Lee is saying he’s looking for big-name fights and listed Conor McGregor as well as the winner of Khabib Nurmagomdov vs. Tony Ferguson as his preferred opponents.

Tonight during the stacked main event of UFC 244, Kevin Lee collided with Gregor Gillespie in a lightweight bout. Kevin ‘The Motown Phenom’ had moved back to the lightweight division after losing to UFC legend, Rafael Dos Anjos in a welterweight matchup in May 2019. His last fight prior was against Al Iaquinta. Their first face-off was during Lee’s UFC debut five years ago. Iaquinta defeated his opponent by unanimous decision at UFC 169. Much to the dismay of ‘The Motown Phenom’, their rematch in 2018 offered the same outcome: a unanimous decision loss.

Last month, Nurmagomedov dismantled Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi. Many fans believed Poirier had what it took to defeat the undisputed lightweight champion, however, his efforts were futile as he was submitted by champ during the third round. Nurmagomedov is now expected to fight Tony Ferguson.

MMA Junkie was first to report that Kevin Lee vs Gregor Gillespie is being discussed for UFC 244 on November 2nd in New York. This will mark the return to the lightweight division for Kevin Lee who most recently suffered a loss to Rafael dos Anjos in his welterweight debut fight. After the one fight at 170 pounds, Lee announced earlier in September that he would be moving back to the lightweight division, and engaged in a back-and-forth with rising contender Islam Makhachev.

Late last week, Kevin Lee announced his intention to return to the lightweight division after a brief stint at welterweight. He stated that he hopes to work his way toward a title fight with lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, and that he’s interested in battling Nurmagomedov’s training partner Islam Makhachev in the meantime. “After looking at that last fight with Khabib, I did an interview before Khabib fought Dustin (Poirier) and said I wasn’t too impressed,” Lee told ESPN (via MMA Mania). “But after seeing the way Khabib handled Dustin, I might want a piece of that cake. I like the biggest target I can find. He’s the real challenge out there. He’s the guy who is going to challenge Jon Jones for the pound-for-pound title. That’s the kind of fight that will get me up.
