Earlier this month, in the main event of UFC Rochester, former UFC lightweight contender Kevin Lee climbed up to the welterweight division, where he battled former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in a high-stakes contender bout. Unfortunately, this move to welterweight did not immediately pay off for Kevin Lee, as he was submitted by his foe in the fourth round.

Kevin Lee is set to move up to welterweight to take on Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC Rochester. Although Lee will weigh around 170 pounds, he was hoping by now he would be a part of a new 165-pound division. Lee and several other fighters have talked about why this division is so important for their health, and added that the UFC would benefit from the creation of another belt. However, UFC President Dana White has said there won’t be a 165-pound division for at least the next seven years — as long as he is in charge. But, “The Motown Phenom” is not buying that at all.

UFC Rochester headliners Rafael dos Anjos and Kevin Lee are two of the most vocal advocates for a 165-pound division in the UFC. Ahead of their welterweight fight at UFC Rochester this weekend, Lee even suggested they both weigh-in at 165 pounds to make a statement to the UFC. “If he’s down with it, I’d be down – and I’d cut an extra little five pounds for that, make a statement, make some noise.” Lee told reporters backstage at UFC 236. “It’s in our contract, we ain’t got to, but I like to push some buttons. It might be a little backroom deal that we got on there. RDA’ is kind of, he don’t really give you too much to go off of, and he don’t really give you too much back and forth, so, you know – I’ll ask him, see what he thinks about it.”

Lee thought about the idea of showing up five pounds less for the welterweight contest to make a statement.
