“You got a three-way dance for Khabib [Nurmagomedov] right now. And it’s between Eddie [Alvarez], [Dustin] Poirier and Kevin Lee. So the fact that you made a fight between two of those guys, which is Poirier and Eddie… Tells me…by default alone, Kevin Lee’s about to fight for a world title.
With Conor [McGregor] out, if he is in fact out and I think he is gonna be having to deal with a legal issue and then Dana [White] said something’s coming on top of that when all of that’s done. Think that’s a fair conclusion.
With Tony [Ferguson] out, which we know he is because of the LCL injury… You then have these three wonderful options. Two of them just got booked. One of them is open. How am I wrong on this? Kevin Lee is about to fight for a world championship. How am I wrong?”
The ‘American Gangster’ certainly makes a lot of sense with his reasoning here.
Kevin Lee is riding high off of an incredibly dominant performance over Edson Barboza at UFC Atlantic City which acted as a rebound to his October loss to Tony Ferguson when fighting over the interim UFC lightweight title.
Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier recently continued to impress with his fight of the year candidate victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC on Fox 29 and many liked the idea of him being the next challenger for the champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Instead, the UFC decided to put together the rematch between him and former champion, Eddie Alvarez.
The two first met in a thrilling but controversial fight at UFC 211 that ended in a no contest from an illegal knee.
The lightweight champion, Nurmagomedov won his title last month by defeating Al Iaquinta in the main event of UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York.
Nurmagomedov has stated recently that talk had begun for a potential fight with him and Conor McGregor but would want to face Poirier if the negotiations took too long. Now with Poirier set to fight at UFC on Fox 30 on July 28th, Lee is the prime option for Nurmagomedov’s quickest return to action.
