Khabib Nurmagomedov has started training camp for his next opponent

With the UFC’s upcoming pay-per-view events beyond UFC 227 lacking headliners, we’re bound to be getting some big announcements any day now.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

A sign for which champions these announcements could include includes the likes of new lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov who recently told Tass that he has begun his next training camp.

“Yes, I started training. I feel very good, thank God there are no injuries. I train hard, in the morning and in the evening, except on Sunday, I gave myself a rest to watch the World Cup.”

Speaking of the World Cup, Nurmagomedov’s potential next opponent and former UFC champion Conor McGregor also attended the game. The two did not end up encountering one another.

While nothing has been yet to be announced for exactly whom Nurmagomedov will be making his first title defense against, reports have come out stating that it could be McGregor potentially for UFC 229 on October 6th.

And if not McGregor, then possibly the former interim 155-pound champion Tony Ferguson. Ferguson was supposed to be the one fighting Nurmagomedov for the undisputed crown in April at UFC 223 but suffered a freak injury a week before fight night. Making it the fourth cancellation of a fight between the two.

The Ultimate Fighter season 13 winner, Ferguson now has his sights set on a September return which could indeed line-up with all of these dates and reports.

Regardless of who it ends up being, the champion doesn’t really care.

@ufc bring this guy, or give me the next one in line, lightweight division have to move.

The undefeated 26-0 first ever Russian UFC champion won his first title with the organization by defeating Al Iaquinta at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York.

After losing Ferguson to injury, Nurmagomedov was then supposed to face the featherweight champion Max Holloway. Holloway would end up being pulled by the New York State Athletic Commission while attempting to make the 155-pound weight limit. Thus leading to Iaquinta stepping in.
