In addition to the pair finally stepping into the Octagon together after having the fight fall through on several occasions, the fight will determine which man will fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor when he chooses to return to the Octagon following the birth of his firstborn son in May.

This weekend, the UFC will touch down in Las Vegas, Nevada with UFC 209. In this stacked card’s main event, we’ll see champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson battle for welterweight gold in a rematch of their thrilling November draw. In the evening’s co-main event, meanwhile, we’ll see undefeated Dagestani grappling specialist Khabib Nurmagomedov take on the streaking Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title. While Nurmagomedov and Ferguson’s anticipated battle is not technically for the undisputed lightweight title, Nurmagomedov believes it is a bigger fight than Woodley and Thompson’s welterweight title rematch, and that it should have gotten the main event spot instead.

In less than one week’s time, the UFC will return to glimmering Las Vegas, Nevada with the stacked UFC 209. This anticipated pay-per-view card will be headlined by a welterweight title rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson, who fought to a frequently debated draw back in November. The co-main event, meanwhile, will see undefeated Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov take on the streaking Tony Ferguson in an interim lightweight title fight, which will keep the division moving while undisputed champ Conor McGregor takes some time off to father his first child. Without a crystal ball, it’s impossible to say how either of these two anticipated title fights will unfold. Both battles seem very capable of going either way. While there’s no way of knowing the outcome of these fights till fight night, however, the betting odds do give us a clear picture of the favorites.

Late last year, news broke that UFC head honchos Dana White and Ari Emmanuel visited Moscow, Russia to begin working on the promotion’s potential debut in the country. At the moment, of course, this debut remains a hypothetical one, as no date or location has been confirmed. If the UFC does touch down in Russia, however, it’s likely to be a huge event, as the country is a hotbed for MMA fans, and one of the last markets the UFC has not yet tapped.

UFC lightweight, Tony Ferguson (22-3), will be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209 on March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The two top contenders were initially suppose to meet December 2015. However, Nurmagomedov pulled out due to injury, and the fight was rescheduled for April 2016 until Ferguson withdrew due to injury, also.

It took several weeks for the UFC to finalize the bout, and while it looked as though the UFC and Ferguson would be able to reach a deal after Ferguson expressed his desire to hold out for more money from the promotion, the promotion was able to secure the fight for the co-main event of UFC 209.

After Conor McGregor captured the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 205 by defeating Eddie Alvarez in a brilliant performance that resulted in a 2nd round TKO loss for Alvarez, all signs pointed to Khabib Nurmagomedov receiving the next lightweight title shot after his dominant 3rd round submission win over Michael Johnson. Following the event, McGregor announced that he would need to take several months off from fighting due to the upcoming birth of his firstborn child in May. In the meantime, the UFC has officially announced that lightweight #1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov would be fighting Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight championship at UFC 209 on March 4th.

The announcement came after a period of speculation, where it appeared as though Ferguson would not be taking the bout. After the pair verbally agreed to the scrap, Ferguson expressed his desire to hold out for more money. After UFC President Dana White revealed that Ferguson wouldn’t be getting the same money as ‘The Eagle’, it was confirmed that Ferguson had accepted the bout.
