The confusion regarding who will headline the UFC’s historic New York card, UFC 205, continued today. After it was initially reported that Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez would fight for the lightweight title, UFC President Dana White revealed that the fight the UFC was looking to book was Alvarez vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov.

For some time, the expectation has been that UFC 205 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, and featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor. Last night, however, UFC President Dana White and top lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov joined forces on Twitter to pull the plug on this long-rumored matchup. Instead, they said, it would be Nurmagomedov that would face Alvarez at UFC 205 – not McGregor.

Nurmagomedov and Alvarez have had a back and forth war of words since Alvarez won the UFC lightweight championship last month. Prior to Nurmagomedov’s return to the Octagon earlier this year, where he TKOd UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher, Nurmagomedov defeated Rafael dos Anjos, who went on to become lightweight champ. The win over Horcher extended Nurmagomedov’s professional record to 23-0, and his UFC record to 7-0.

Friday afternoon in Russia, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko fought former UFC light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado in the main event of EFN 50. After being dropped in the first round, Emelianenko went on to win the next two rounds, and ultimately win a majority decision. While some thought that the judges made the right call given that Emelianenko won the last two rounds, others thought that the decision as extremely controversial, and Emelianenko should have lost given that he was dominated the first round.
